Whereas monoculture will ultimately lead to a barren landscape, diversity will produce healthy life. Unlike plants, people have a choice and mixing cultures may sound like an ideal world we are still far removed form that.
Focusing on what people have in common rather than looking at the differences may result in a very fruitful engagement.
I will definitely use the rainforest analogy, or ask the biology dept. to do so, as one of the many stepping stones in creating understanding.
