I didn't realize how much colors played a role in this book. The use of the color green, lavender, blue and yellow all add symbolism throughout the book. I believe the green could be envy because it is at the end of Daisy's dock which Gatsby is always reaching towards. He is envious of Tom for being married to Daisy. It could also be a symbol for hope.

Before, I knew that Fitzgerald used the colors to describe the characters, plot, and setting and each had a certain concept; however, I did not know the significance to this, whether it pertained to a certain theme or what. Now I know that one of the reasons Fitzgerald utilized colors to describe people was to describe to American Dream. I also learned that the theme may not have only been about achieving the American Dream, but also how they achieve it.

This activity allowed me to see parts of the text much differently than the first time through. Two of the papers I visited spoke about superiority, but one was about gender superiority and the other was about wealth superiority. While I had noticed that this book expands upon the idea of men being viewed as superior to women, I was not as aware that it also describes how the wealthy are viewed as superior to the poor. I knew wealth played an important role, but I never tied it in to the theme of superiority.
