I volunteered for international Conversation Partners (ICP) to help ESOL students practice their English outside of their classes, because they don’t get to practice as much in their ESOL classes. Now I volunteered for three times a week which was Monday through Wednesday from 12:00 to 1:00, the (ICP) started February 27, and ended at April 28. I never volunteered before, so I wanted to try something close to Brookhaven, I found out that they were in need for volunteers for International Conversation Partners, and it was located at Brookhaven.

At first I was a bit nervous since I wasn’t sure how many ESOL students will be in my small group, but I was slightly relived when I found out that there will be another (ICP) volunteer joining me for all those three days, so I was relief. When I was with my ESOL students we mostly talk about their day, their culture, we ask what they did over the weekend, we even play all kinds of games, like Genga, Uno, etc. In some days, we even take our ESOL students to Brookhaven events like a small cultural festival, this help them increase their reading skills.

Well I learned to take control of the groups, I’ve also learn a lot from my ESOL students, their cultures, and the difference with their way of life with ours. Another thing that I’ve learn from them is that they must take some English or writing, speaking, and reading ESOL Courses.

What were some Challenges and Rewards in (ICP)?

One of my rewards is seeing my ESOL students improving their reading speed, speech, and writing style. I had a couple of challenges like how to start the conversation, another challenge was to communicate to some of my ESOL students who speak Arabic, Spanish, Thai, Vietnamese, and when my ESOL students don’t understand they go back speaking their own language. I can speak with the four Spanish speakers, but the rest takes time, At first I did had trouble remembering all of their name since I have three ESOL students in my Monday group, 9 in my Tuesday group, and four in my Wednesday it definitely took a while.

Service Learning/Community Service with ENGL-1301

I kind of like Service Learning partnering up with my ENGL 1301 because it helps me communicate with people, especially since I did help three groups get better with their reading, writing, speech, the English language. I also got to learn about different cultures, and countries and they even taught us a little of their language. In the end I got used to community service and it counts as real community service when I transfer to a University.
