         <description><![CDATA[<div>The study was determined to be reliable and valid because it was generalisable as both males and females were used. The study can be standarized because of the number of sessions they had, temperature of the room and the distance from the seats to the screen can be repeated again with other psychologists and they would get the same results.<br>The ecological validity of the experiment was low because participants were only exposed to their phobias through a video on the screen displayed in a university, therefore it may not count as a real life experiment.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Weakness :it could be argued that Asch’s experiment has low levels of ecological validity. Asch’s test of conformity, a line judgement task, is an artificial task, which does not reflect conformity in everyday life. Consequently, we are unable to generalise the results of Asch to other real life situations, such as why people may start smoking or drinking around friends, and therefore these results are limited in their application to everyday life<br><br>Strength : Asch interviewed his participants after the experiment to find out why they conformed. Most of the participants said that they knew their answers were incorrect, but they went along with the group in order to fit in, or because they thought they would be ridiculed. This confirms that participants conformed due to normative social influence and the desire to fit in.<br>Which means it provides evidence for normative social influence </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The study is high in reliability. Several aspects of the procedure were standardised. For example, the temperature of the room, number of sessions and the distance they sat from the screen. This means that the experiment can be repeated by another psychologist and get similar results.<br><br>Increased internal validity as potential extraneous variables such as temperature of the room, viewing experience etc were all controlled. Therefore we can be certain that the experimental condition was only affected by the desired factor so we can establish a cause and effect relationship.</div><div><br></div><div>Low in ecological validity. Exposure to the phobic object consisted of a video of a plane journey which took place in a lab at a university This doesn't reflect everyday life.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Weakness: Asch used a <strong>biased sample</strong> of 50 male students from Swarthmore College in America. Therefore, we cannot generalise the results to other populations, for example female students, and we are unable to conclude if female students would have conformed in a similar way to male students. As a result Asch’s sample lacks population validity.<br>Strength: The research is cross-cultural. This means it isn't biased towards certain cultures and can be applied to other research worldwide.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Most of the research on minority influence is based on experiments conducted in laboratories. This raises the question of <strong>ecological validity</strong>. </div><div>The participants in laboratory experiments are rarely 'real groups'. More often than not they are a collection of students who do not know each other and will probably never meet again. They are also involved in an <strong>artificial task</strong>.  As such they are very different from minority groups in the wider society who seek to change majority opinion.<br>Also <strong>Moscovici (1969)</strong> used female students as participants , so it would be wrong to generalize his result to all people – they only tell us about the behavior of female students.<br>females are said to be more conformist than males, therefore there might be a gender difference in the way that males and females respond to minority influence. Another critic could be that four people are not enough for a group and could not be considered as the majority.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Aim of the study is to investigate whether systematic desensitisation  is an effective treatment for fear of flying  of maladjusted fears. • The purpose of the study was to measure the effectiveness of systematic desensitisation as a treatment for a fear of flying. • A volunteer sample of 41 participants was allocated to each condition using random sampling. 20 participants were assigned to the treatment group who would receive the systematic desensitisation, while 21 were assigned to the control group which did not receive any therapy. • A number of diagnostic scales were used, including Escala de Miedo a Volar (EMV), which measures degree of anxiety perceived in relation to different flight situations. EPAV scales were used to assess the occurrence of catastrophic thoughts, such as the wings falling off or the fear of the engine catching fire. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Asch (1951) conducted one of the most famous laboratory experiments examining conformity. He wanted to examine the extent to which social pressure from a majority, could affect a person to conform.</div><div>Asch’s sample consisted of 50 male students from Swarthmore College in America, who believed they were taking part in a vision test. Asch used a line judgement task, where he placed on real naïve participants in a room with seven confederates (actors), who had agreed their answers in advance. The real participant was <strong>deceived</strong> and was led to believe that the other seven people were also real participants. The real participant always sat second to last.<br><br></div><div>In turn, each person had to say out loud which line (A, B or C) was most like the target line in length.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Validity:</strong> Capafons et al (1998) carefully matched the control and treatment groups, which eliminated participant variables and increased the validity of the resluts.<br><br><strong>Reliability:</strong> In this study, Capafons et al used a number of strict controls, such as- the temperature of the room being at 22.5'C, the armchair being positioned at 1.8 metres from the television and the same psychometrics being used on each participant. These strict controls enabled Capafons to repeat the experiment onto 41 participants; therefore it can be regarded to be reliable.</div>]]></description>

Although the sample was relatively large (106), it comprised all undergraduates students (mean age 19) and there were more than twice as many women in the sample as men. This means that  violent video games may not have the same dehumanising effect on older or younger players and those from less affluent or well-educated backgrounds. Also the gender imbalance means the findings may not be the same with all males and this is important as violent games tend  to be played more by males.<br>RELIABILITY: <br>The results could be considered reliable as the standardised procedure that was employed makes the study replicable and thus scientific. Their ages ranged from 17 to 34 years (M = 19.28, SD = 2.39).          <description><![CDATA[<div>A weakness of the study is the poor <strong>generalizability</strong>. Although the sample was relatively large (106), it comprised all undergraduates students (mean age 19) and there were more than twice as many women in the sample as men. This means that  violent video games may not have the same dehumanising effect on older or younger players and those from less affluent or well-educated backgrounds. Also the gender imbalance means the findings may not be the same with all males and this is important as violent games tend  to be played more by males.</div><div>Despite this weakness, the design of the study means that the results could be considered <strong>reliable</strong> as the standardised procedure that was employed makes the study replicable and thus scientific. There were mainly controlled variables such as ensuring that all players played the same game (Topspin tennis or Mortal Kombat) for the same amount of time, whilst blocked from being able to see their opponent by a barrier. Also the questionnaires used quantitative data to find out about perceptions of humanity using likert scales and this means that the data is not open to interpretation by the researcher improving the reliability further.</div><div>Bastian’s study is without doubt an interesting study, however many psychologists advocate that violent video games are not directly linked to violent acts and a group of over 200 academics signed a letter to show their feelings about the APA report which suggested there was a link. This is important because many psychologists would argue that Bastian’s findings lack application to real life; just because you self-report feeling less human after playing for 15 minutes, does not mean that your intentions towards others or likely possible real world behaviours will change and make you become more violent.</div><div>This said, it is another piece of research that could be applied in schools to help educate pupils and parents about possible effects of violent game play. Interestingly the flip side of this is that playing co-operative games could in fact enhance feelings of humanity and this could be an area for future research. This could potentially be a way of helping children or adults who have problems with aggression to feel more connected to other people and less dehumanised and this would be a highly beneficial application for society.</div><div>With regard to validity the study has strengths and weaknesses, firstly the players only play for a very short amount of time and in the real word players often spend hours engaged in a game, however one could argue this simply demonstrates how quickly people become dehumanised and one could argue playing for longer would simply lead to even greater effects although this has not been studied and therefore potentially people reach a ceiling and then become more humanised again the longer they play.</div><div>Also as we know nothing of the participants previous gaming history the reason they say they feel more dehumanised could be due to demand characteristics in that they know this is the expected outcome and therefore demonstrate this through their self-report meaning that the conclusions lack internal validity.</div>]]></description>

The focus is on the self perception of those who play violent video games and their perception of others.<br>Study 1 aimed to investigate the effects in a violent video games context where players were violent towards each other.<br><strong><em>Procedure</em></strong>:<br>The game was Mortal Kombat where player play against each other. There were 106<br>participants, who were all undergraduates aged from 17 to 34 years old. The participants<br>were randomly assigned to one of two groups.<br>Participants viewed the same screen but were separated by a wall so they couldn’t see<br>each other. 52 of the participants played Mortal Kombat and 54 of the participants<br>played Spin Tennis, a non-violent game. Participants were asked how much the enjoyed<br>the game and how frustrating they found the game, both on a scale of 1 to 7.<br>Participants then had to rate themselves on eight human Nature items and rate their<br>opponent on the same four items. When answering the items, they had to think about<br>their experiences whilst playing the game. Four of the items were positive e.g. ‘I felt<br>that I was emotional, like I was responsive and warm’ and four of the items were<br>reversed e.g. ‘I felt like I lacked self-restraint, like an animal’.<br><strong><em>Result:</em></strong><br>After controlling for the effects of frustration, enjoyableness and gender it was found that<br>there was a significant difference between the two groups on rating of both self-humanity<br>and the humanity of the other player, with those who played the non-violent game<br>perceiving both themselves and the other player as possessing more humanity.<br>For the violent video games the mean score for self-humanity is 3.74 and the mean score for others humanity is 4.43.<br>For the non-violent video games the mean score for self-humanity is 4.35 and the mean score for others humanity is 4.93.<br><strong><em>Strengths:</em></strong><br>This could simply demonstrate how quickly people become dehumanized and one could argue that playing for longer would simply lead to even greater effects<br><strong><em>Weaknesses:</em></strong><br>Generalizability is considered a weakness. This study was relatively large but it comprised all undergraduate students and these were more than twice as many woman in the study as men. This means that violent video games may not have the same dehumanizing effect on older or younger players and those from less efficient or from an educated background. The gender imbalance doesn't help to get the findings in the same way with all males, as violent video games are known to be played mostly by male. <br><strong><em>Conclusion:</em></strong><br>Study 1<br>It was concluded that the applying of violent video games does decrease the perceived humanity of both the play and the other playing they are playing against.</div>]]></description>

Rate game like above PANAS used to measure self esteem. Results of study is that  those who played the violent video game seeing themselves as less human. There was no difference in the perception of the co-players' humanity between those who played the violent game and those who played the non-violent game. playing violent video games reduces self perception of humanity when playing as an avatar does not effect real life.</div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

In Asch’s experiment, the participants were required to judge lengths of line, which is a very artificial task and everyday examples of conformity (e.g. peer pressure) do not involve such mundane requests.<br><br>Strength<br><strong>Asch</strong> line experiments were controlled lab experiments. <strong>Asch</strong> was able to test specific variables that increased or decreased conformity. Standardised procedures and instructions meant the line experiments could be replicated. The line experiments became the standard <strong>research</strong> 'paradigm'.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Bastian et al. study very clearly has real-world application. Computer gaming is very popular, and with computer animation becoming ever more realistic, and the consoles becoming more affordable, questions need to be asked about its effect on behaviour. This is because it contributes to a widely held and heated debate on the effects of violent computer games and particularly the effects that prolonged exposure can have on its audience, especially children. Studies like this have led to and helped justify the use of age certification of games. <br><br>Furthermore, the Bastian et al. research results concur with previous research in the area on the video game effect. Studies conducted by notable authorities such as Anderson and Bushman (2001); Anderson, Gentile and Buckley (2007); and Anderson and Bushman (2007) all show negative impacts and effects on behaviour through video gaming. As a result, this adds to the academic impetus of the present research of Bastian et al. and his unique drive to examine dehumanisation in this process, which had not been examined previously.<br><br>A problem with concluding that video gaming causes dehumanisation of self and others is that the participants playing the games were actually also victims of game violence, either by another player or by a game avatar. It is perhaps because they were victims that the scores of self-humanity were reduced following playing the violent games.<br><br>This study was ethically appropriate on many grounds. This is because individuals were fully informed in their decisions to take part; the study itself holds limited if any deception, and the research team illustrated their competence as researchers throughout. As the result the research ensures that the moral standards expected in physiological research are maintained.<br><br>However, the Bastian et al. research illustrates problems of generalisability because the study used a small and biased sample. Between the two studies, the majority were women. As a result it is arguable that this gender bias (gynocentric result) might produce findings that are not globally representative of a typical computer gaming population. Furthermore, questions of validity can be raised with Bastian's research, such as with the rating scales that the researchers used. Bastian himself admits that participants might have been compelled to rate themselves less human or more negatively given the context in which they were studied. However, participants indicated that they did not suspect that the research concerned a link between video game violence and dehumanisation.  </div>]]></description>

There were mainly controlled variables such as ensuring that all players played the same game (Topspin tennis or Mortal Kombat) for the same amount of time, whilst blocked from being able to see their opponent by a barrier. Also the questionnaires used quantitative data to find out about perceptions of humanity using likert scales and this means that the data is not open to interpretation by the researcher improving the reliability further.<br><br>However one weakness : </div><div>-of the study is the poor generalizability. Although the sample was relatively large (106), it comprised all undergraduates students (mean age 19) and there were more than twice as many women in the sample as men. This means that  violent video games may not have the same dehumanising effect on older or younger players and those from less affluent or well-educated backgrounds. Also the gender imbalance means the findings may not be the same with all males and this is important as violent games tend  to be played more by males</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

Participants volunteered by responding to a media campaign. Participants were interviewed regarding the fear of flying using a IDG-FV.  EMV and the EPAV-B were used to measure the frequency of catastrophic thoughts and physiology symptoms that might have present in different flight sisuation.          <description><![CDATA[<div> <br>In terms of validity and reliability, the Bastian et al study has a high point of reliability as it clearly has real - world application. The study was ethically appropriate on many levels which shows that it has met the ethical guidelines. This raises another high point for reliability as the results he gathered leans more towards being accurate. However it stands a low point of reliability as well because, the study illustrates problems of generalisability as the majority of the participants were women. This makes the study gender biased. This will also raise questions regarding validity when it comes to rating scales that the researchers used. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The working memory model proposed by baddeley and hitch states that the short term memory is more complex than suggested by the multi-store model of memory. The WMM states that the short term memory is made of up four components [ the central executive, the phonological loop, buffers and the visual spatial sketchpad ]. The role of central executive is to allocate task to the other slave systems and it is known as processing but has a limited capacity .the first slave system is phonological loop which is responsible for auditory information. It is made up of two parts : the articulary loop and phonological loop which helps in retrieval of words and store of words . The VSSP stores visual and spatial information and helps us in remembering a complete image of things when needed. The role of the buffers are not well explained but it is said to be a storage system for the central executive and it integrates information from all the stores.&nbsp;<br><br>The strength of this model&nbsp;<br>- it differentiates between the short term and long term memory&nbsp;<br>- case of KF shows that there are different slave systems as he has impaired phonological loop but unaffected visual abilities&nbsp;<br>The weakness of this model&nbsp;<br>- it doesn’t differentiate between the different types of long term memory such as semantic and episodic memory&nbsp;<br>-it doesn’t provide any explanation for long term memory .</div>]]></description>

Bartlett’s central insight was that memory is not like a tape recorder: it doesn’t faithfully play back our experiences. Instead, it changes or “reconstructs” them imaginatively.It shows how scientific research proceeds, because Bartlett’s fairly unscientific research in the 1930s was improved upon by Loftus, who mounted much more rigorous lab experiments in the ‘70s and ‘80s.</div><div>It goes against the typical features of the Cognitive Approach, since it rejects the idea of memory being like the sort of information processing used by a computer - it's much more creative but less reliable than that!.<br>Schema theory:<br>Bartlett’s main idea is that our memory is grouped into categories called “schemas”. When we recall an event, our schemas tell us what is <em>supposed</em> to happen. The schemas might fill in the gaps in our memory (<strong>confabulation</strong>) and even put pressure on our mind to remember things in a way that fits in with the schema, removing or changing details. For example, you might remember the Japanese diners eating with chopsticks (because that’s part of your schema for Japanese meals) whereas in reality the Japanese use their fingers to eat sushi.<br><br><strong>Q3.</strong> The multi-store model of memory (also known as the modal model) was proposed by Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin (1968) and is a structural model. Multi-Store model of memory<br></strong><br><strong><mark>Strengths:</mark></strong></div><ul><li>One strength of the multistore model is that is gives us a good understanding of the structure and process of the STM. This is good because this allows researchers to expand on this model. This means researchers can do experiments to improve on this model and make it more valid and they can prove what the stores actually do. Therefore, the model is influential as it has generated a lot of research into memory.</li><li>The model is supported by studies of amnesiacs: For example the HM case study.&nbsp; HM is still alive but has marked problems in long-term memory after brain surgery. He has remembered little of personal (death of mother and father) or public events (Watergate, Vietnam War) that have occurred over the last 45 years. However his short-term memory remains intact.</li></ul><div><br><strong><mark>Weaknesses:</mark></strong></div><ul><li>The model is oversimplified, in particular when it suggests that both short-term and long-term memory each operate in a single, uniform fashion.&nbsp; We now know is this not the case.</li><li>Rehearsal is considered a too simple explanation to account for the transfer of information from STM to LTM. For instance, the model ignores factors such as motivation, effect and strategy (e.g. mnemonics) which underpin learning. Also, rehearsal is not essential to transfer information into LTM. The purpose of this study was to explore how schemas operate in a well-known environment and to examine whether or not schemas operate differently in real versus virtual environments. Twenty-four undergraduate students from a small liberal arts college in the northeast participated for course credit. Two identical offices (a real office and a virtual office) were created and filled with eight consistent and eight inconsistent items. Each participant explored either the real office or the virtual office for 20 seconds without any knowledge that their memory would be tested. After leaving the office, participants completed a recognition task and a short demographic questionnaire. Overall sensitivity and higher confidence in recognition memory scores was found for inconsistent compared to consistent items. Greater support for the consistency effect was observed in this study and interpreted in terms of the dynamic memory model and the schema-plus-correction model. As humans have more complex thinking and may react differently compared to animals in aggressive situations. &nbsp;</div>]]></description>

He found that her menstrual cycle shortened from average of 28 days to 25 days. Infradian rhythm is said to be effected by internal factors but this study suggests that menstrual cycle could also be affected by exogenous zietgebers.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>
