<title>I misread Jess Crombie&#39;s presentation title as &#39;involving process and betrayal&#39; and thought that sounded intriguing. How come efforts to represent, explore and explain tragedy, misery and suffering so often result in &#39;betrayal&#39; in the form of unintended consequences and reproductions of conditions of oppression? And what can we do about it?</title>

<title>During field work looking at the creation of imagery in Calais and Dunkirk I have experienced a common theme of anxiety in the &#39;act of photography&#39;. Anxiety held by both the NGO producing the photograph and anxiety of the potential subject of the photograph (the refugee or migrant for want of better term). This anxiety seems to have prevented many photographs being taken. I&#39;d like to discuss the ethical balance of the perceived need for an NGO to document a situation in order to raise awareness verses the need to retain good relationships and trust with the refugees and migrants whom they are trying to support. </title>
