In case study 7.3, a student Timmy is often teased and bullied for his nonconformity to gender norms. He is seen playing with "girl toys" and spending his time with only his female classmates. As he gets older, the bullying and exclusion grows worse. Ms. Gover, his new second-grade teacher, is conflicted on how to address this situation with the students.

Challenges: If Ms. Gover were to call attention to what makes Timmy different, that may make the bullying worse. If Ms. Gover told the parents to help Timmy essentially "man up", parents may be offended, and Ms. Gover gets in trouble.
Opportunities: The students gain a learning opportunity that not everybody is the same and to not expect anyone to fit in a box of what you think they should be. Essentially, build tolerance.

Punish students for bullying! No matter the situation, bullying another student is not okay. Then, without directly calling out Timmy, plan a lesson on tolerance. Make the students realize that everyone is different. The sooner the students can learn this, the more likely they are to live life as more tolerant individuals.

Timmy's previous teachers did not do the best job addressing the teasing when it first started in kindergarten. When teachers are trained, they need to focus on how to deal with issues like this. Gender is becoming a hot topic in schools. Teachers need to be able to recognized that eliminating these stereotypes in their classrooms will make for a better one.

To properly address this situation, Ms. Gover first needs to provide a safe place in the classroom for those who may be considered different. By incorporating activities that are not as "gendered", it can help Timmy make connections with other students. Throughout the rest of the school year, Ms. Gover can teach the students about tolerance and how to be more accepting of others that may seem "strange" or different to you. In years prior, teachers will need to become ready to address situations like this. Having more inclusion and less stereotypes in the classroom will help to create a more inclusive classroom.
