Dr Sayema Rahman Khan is a PRINCE2-certified Research Project Manager with over 15 years’ experience spanning technical, operational, research, and project management roles across sectors. She is currently the lead Research Project Manager for a national precision-oncology trial for rare cancers at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. She also works at the University of Manchester, where she leads the design and delivery of RISE@Manchester, an in-house career development programme for global majority researchers funded through the Enhancing Research Culture initiative, which she was successfully awarded this year. Sayema is the founder of the South Asian Women in Higher Education (SAWHE) Network, a rapidly growing national community supporting, celebrating, and connecting women of South Asian heritage across UK universities. She was also recently appointed co-chair of UoM’s Research Project Managers Network. A champion of equity, inclusion, and representation, a scientist by training and a mother of three, Sayema’s work is driven by purpose, resilience, and the belief in diversity, amplifying underrepresented voices, and creating pathways for others to rise.

Over the past decade I’ve held various PRISM roles, most recently as Warwick’s Research Culture Manager, and I believe thriving research environments rely on a diversity of roles. At Warwick, I work on initiatives to enhance research culture, including the Enhancing Research Culture funding call, the Interdisciplinary Research Spotlights programme, and, from next year, as co-lead of Research Professional Futures. Beyond Warwick, I co-chair and organise conferences, deliver training, and created and lead the Research Culture Enablers Network (RCEN) and the Research Culture Knowledge Exchange group on Linkedin to share practical ideas across institutions.

Leveraging PRISM Expertise Through Consultancy (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging)

I’m passionate about advancing more inclusive research practices that move us beyond performative or tokenistic approaches, so that people from minoritised and marginalised backgrounds genuinely feel they belong within the research space, fully and authentically, without having to mask or code-switch. I also support those who want to learn more about inclusive practices, helping them build skills, confidence, and practical approaches. Creating cultures where everyone can participate fully and authentically is at the heart of my EDI practice.

I’m also committed to strengthening belonging and wellbeing for those doing emotionally demanding research and leading significant change. My focus is on ensuring that wellbeing and care are intentionally built into all of our projects - because while we all work hard to support change, who is caring for the change-makers who do it all?

After nearly 14 years at the University of York, my role is sadly coming to an end. As many of us know, precarity is a real challenge in our profession, but with the experience I’ve gained, I’m taking this moment as an opportunity to be brave (it is daunting!), step forward, and build something meaningful. Any support, connections, or recommendations from fellow PRISMs would truly mean a lot.

I hope the work I’ve done so far reflects the care and commitment I bring to this space - my LinkedIn recommendations (and I’ve been shortlisted for the upcoming inclusive impact awards 2025) have meant a great deal to me and I’m grateful that others have found value in what I do.

I’m looking forward to sharing my expertise in this area with you on the panel. However, if you’d like to know more, please connect with me. I would also really appreciate your support in recommending me to others who may be interested in working together.

Many thanks.

Raj

I bring these issues up time and again at The University of Manchester but senior management 'listen' and then do absolutely nothing. I would also be happy to talk about our Cancer research project manager network that I co-lead in Manchester.
