A história basea-se numa rapariga pobre,filha de um moleiro que tera sido oferecida por o próprio pai a um Rei,prometendo a este que a sua filha transformava palha em fios de ouro.
O rei com o passar do tempo ao ver os resultados no trabalho da rapariga acabou por lhe prometer a sua mao em casamento,mas por pura ganância de se tornar o rei mais rico de sempre, uma vez que a sua mulher transformava palha em ouro.
Por de traz de toda esta farsa a rapariga tinha um segredo, que nao era ela que transforva toda aquela palha em ouro mas sim um gnomo em troca de algo. No ultimo pedido da rapariga ela ja nao tinha mais nada para dar ao gnomo, wntao ele fez lhe uma proposta um bocado macabra, ouro em troca do seu primeiro filho com o rei.
A rapariga tornou se rainha e passado uns anos teve o seu primeiro filho, vivendo descansada durante todo este tempo porque pensava que o gnomo se tinha esquecido uma vez que nao tinha aparecido ate aquele dia. Um dia o gnomo apareceu e pediu-lhe que ela lhe desse o que lhe devia, a rapariga apavorada perguntou lhe se nao lhe poderia dar outra coisa em troca e o gnomo fez lhe uma proposta que se ela advinha se o seu verdadeiro nome que a promessa seria desfeita. Um dia o descuidado gnomo meteu se num campo aos pulos a cantarolar o seu nome e que ninguem iria descubrir,a rapariga surpressa foi logo ter com ele passado um tempo e advinhou o nome dele, o gnomo
