In Veracruz, things weren't going very well. People from South America like Guatemala, Honduras, Salvador, Panama, and so many other countries were migrating to Mexico and taking low-wage jobs such as working in Coca-Cola & Pepsi factories. Since then the costs of goods started rising and families were struggling in many types of ways. Then we meet Varacruzs well-respected man, Don Moi. Don Moi was a fat wealthy man who was everybody's neighborhood friend. But also known as a coyote who helps cross people over the border. That's his job.

In this chapter, it talks about the coyotes and their knowledge about going through the borders loopholes. Coyotes are the nicknames of people who are basically human smugglers who help immigrants the Mexico-United States border as their job. It talks about Don Moi and how his business works. Also how the Mexican Government tries to stop people from crossing the border. Such as making signs saying not to trust the Coyotes but it doesn't do anything since they cant read. Later on they start providing survival kits with snacks and water but the US stops it. This is also because of what the Americans think these people are coming to the US for, they think they're only coming to do bad.

Guides are known to be sketchy and they'll do anything to get their money. They wear bad clothes on purpose to blend in, they also give their walkers cocaine or diet pills to make them walk faster even though they know there's a high risk of them dying due to a heart attack. Going to show that the Guia's don't really care if the migrates live or die.

As he's getting ready, he realizes that Maradona is nowhere to be found. He also sees that its starting to get hot. So he tries to open Maradona's door but its lock and he can't see anything through the window. Turn's out Maradona left him which is a very bad thing because he's the one that knows the roads around here. Later on Mendez tells El Negro what had happened and he got 2 other guias to join Mendez. The guias and the polls had arrived early to the Devil's highway, which is already bad enough because they'll get sick faster due to the heat.

In this chapter, we find out that before writing this book the author came across Don Moi in Illinois. He finds out that he was beaten with shovels and ax handles because not only did he take their husbands but he has the audacity to try to make their homes as well. We also got to know that later on Reymundo sr and Reymundo jr's nephew crossed the border on the same path they were using. He became rich and accomplished his goal to be a professor who one day hopes to change the world for the better.

In this chapter, we learn that Rita Vargas is doing everything in her power to get justice for the Yuma 16/Wellton 26. Not only is she helping bring back the dead bodies to their homes but she is also helping win the case against Mendez. Obviously things aren't looking too good for Mendez since the men all snitched on him. In Mendez's defense he writes a letter explains how miserable his life and how it got to the point of him helping people cross the boarder. How his purpose is just trying to help these men.
