Naquela época, apenas 90 Porsche 550 foram produzidos, e eles rapidamente estabeleceram o domínio nas classes de 1,1 e 1,5 litros. O Porsche 550 é um carro de motor central com motor de quatro cilindros refrigerado a ar, seguindo o precedente do protótipo Porsche 356/1 de 1948 projetado por Ferry Porsche . O design de corrida com motor central foi desenvolvido com o modelo 718 da Porsche ; suas vantagens fizeram com que ele se tornasse o design dominante para carros de corrida de alto nível em meados da década de 1960.

O Porsche 550 tem uma sólida história de corridas; a primeira corrida em que participou, a Nürburgring Eifel Race , em maio de 1953, venceu. O 550 spyder geralmente terminava entre os três primeiros da sua classe. Cada spyder foi projetado e personalizado para ser disputado.

Um Porsche 550A spyder 1958 foi vendido em leilão em 2018 pela Bonhams por US$ 5.170.000 (£ 4.115.763) – o preço mais alto para um 550 em leilão.
