Even a newspaper article needs a perspective. But, it is most significant in writing fiction. 

Having an engaging perspective is paramount to keeping a reader's attention. The most common way to do that is to either tell the story from the first-person perspective of a character, or from the narrator approach. 

These both have advantages and disadvantages, but I won't go into those here. The author has chosen a first person perspective, and this is how the story becomes engaging.

Stepping into the mind of someone entirely different is almost always a novel experience. This story capitalizes on that by giving us an extreme example of the human psyche. This keeps the reader entertained with simply being able to understand how they would think.

There is no driving conflict in the beginning of the story, and yet that doesn't matter to effectively keep the reader's attention. The psyche of someone so utterly alien is what draws the reader in, and that drives the reader through the early part of the story.
