Power, Privilege, & Positionally: My Identities

Privilege: "Privilege is the unrecognized advantage positioning certain people in a favored state and systematically conferring power on groups of people in specific contexts" (Lucia Crevani et al., 2018).

I am a white, able-bodied, cisgender, heterosexual, upper middle class, English-speaking female. All of these factors contribute to my privilege compared to other individuals.

Power: "the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others".

I am in a position of power as a graduate student, a clinician, and a US citizen.

Positionality: "the reflective process of understanding our own social position and identity relative to others and the work we engage in" (Daly, Martincheck, Martinez et al., 2023)

I think it is important to reflect on our identity and positionality. I am a white female who wants to continue to learn and advocate for individuals in marginalized communities. I believe in inclusivity and equality. My goal as an SLP is to provide the best care to my ability to individuals with diverse backgrounds and disabiltiies.

Question: How can I ensure that I am approaching each conversation with a client or parent with compassion and understanding regarding their experiences?

We all have bad days. We all have experiences where we say the wrong thing. We all have implicit biases we do not even realize. What are ways that I can provide comfort, compassion, and understanding when delivering hard topics?

As a Christian, I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins. In everything that I do, I do for God. I strive to love like Him and serve others in my community with kindness, acceptance, and forgiveness.

ICF Model

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) is a model that describes how a person's health, environment, and personal factors affect their ability to function.

As a clinician, I believe that it is important to assess all factors contributing to a person's health. I look at the WHOLE individual, not just the disability.

SLPs PLAY ALL DAY

As SLPs, we have heard that all we do is play with children. Many do not understand the important of play-based therapy.

"Through play, children learn to understand the world around them. They naturally develop their vocabulary, learn sentence structure, and practice conversations—essential components for speech and language milestones" (Communication Community, 2024).

Inclusion: The Social Model

I believe in inclusion in the classroom, in the clinic, in the workplace, and in everyday life. I believe that as SLPs it is our job to advocate for our students to be in their LRE and to have the resources that they need to succeed.
