Throne of Glass is the first book in the series by Sarah J. Maas about an assassin, Celaena, who evolved into a loving girl who likes to read and cares about life. The book started with her at a death camp traveling to her old hometown, winning the competition, and turning into the king's champion. Celaena was asked to fight in a tournament to compete to be the king’s champion. She had to fight against 24 other people to win. While she was training for the competition, three out of the 24 contestants were brutally murdered. For the next few weeks, she figures out hints like the Wyrdmarks, which are old symbols and language. She also discovered Cain was killing the other contestants with demons that he had summoned. When she was spying on Cain, she was caught and attacked by a ridderak. She ran to the tomb of the first King and Queen and killed the ridderak but was bitten by it and was bleeding to death until her friend found her in the room and saved her. After that, she found out that her friends have been trying to protect her the whole time. She trained for a couple of weeks until the big duel. During her first duel, she easily won against him in under 2 minutes. Things changed when she battled against Cain. He had Celaena poisoned by a person working with him. Cain brutally beat her until her mind entered another world filled with demons. While in her mind, the first Queen arrived, protected her, takes the poison out of Celeana's body, and gives her strength to fight Cain. Celaena is flung around by Cain like a rag doll until she sliced his arms and stabs him in the side of his stomach. Since Cain could no longer fight her, he was declared the winner. While Celaena is laying on the ground getting medical help, Cain finds a knife and tries to stab her in the back. Chaol sees this and stabs him in the heart, instantly killing him. A couple of weeks later Celaena signs a contract with the king to be his assassin.

Book Review

I really enjoyed the book and the characters in the book. There were so many things that made it interesting from portals, fights, demons, and so much more. There is so much action in the story that you never get bored. I enjoyed the story in the book and how the characters play parts in the story. The author changed perspectives and make it all fit together smoothly, It was interesting to see the main character, Celaena, going from a death camp "But she—at seventeen—had gone to a death camp. And survived." (Sarah J. Mass Page 264 ) to be the king's assassin and servant “Be my Champion, and you’ll find yourself a free woman. Four years of service was the bargain you set with my son, though I cannot imagine why he felt the need to bargain with you,” he said with a deadly glare in Dorian’s direction. Dorian bit his lip but said nothing. (Sarah J. Mass Page 402). It is interesting that we were following her the entire time and seeing how she grows, gets stronger, and is better at controlling what she needs to do in a fight. Altogether, this book is now one of my favorite books to read. There is so much action and different avengers that the characters have to go through to succeed, for the book to get more interesting. I enjoyed how sometimes that book got scary and it makes you nervous about what is to come. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes fiction, old times, and action.

Theme

The theme in the book is that someone should never give up and always try their hardest. This theme shows up so many times in the book, especially when Celaena is training or competing against other people during the challenges. This is evident when she is in the main duel with Cain. On page 360 “And in that moment, somehow his face was the only thing that mattered. She stirred, and couldn’t stop her sob as her body erupted with pain that made her lie still again. But she kept her focus on his brown eyes, on his tightly pressed lips as they parted and whispered, “Get up.” She pulled her arm away from the line, bracing her palm against the frozen ground. She kept his gaze when she moved her other hand beneath her chest and bit down on the scream of pain as she pushed upward, her shoulder nearly buckling. She slid her good leg under her. As she made to stand, she felt the thud of Cain’s steps, and Chaol’s eyes went wide.” This event shows that since Claudia did not give up and kept trying, she persevered in the battle against Cain and won. Another time this showed up was when Claudia was studying the Wyrdmarks. She spent months trying to figure out what it meant and never gave up trying. She found out lots of information that would help her, and also scare her. In the end, we see that the characters who never gave up succeeded in the book and were rewarded.

I think that when the author first tells us about Claudia and that she is an assassin, it sets the tone of the story. It makes us wonder and start to think about what she did to deserve that title and if she is really the best. I liked the layout of the story and the story that it told. The author was smart to change perspective right on cliffhangers to make the reader want to read on. The author was smart to add items that were real and some that were fiction. Emaples are the wyrdmarks and the ridderak being fiction and castles, items used for fights, and even a tomb with coffins in them. I liked how the book took place in the Medieval period. I think that the author did very well at making the book and making sure that it was interesting.
