Number 7 on this list. In order to get students motivated, you can reward the student who completes all assignments and obeys classroom rules but allowing them to pick what activity will be completed on Friday. By doing this, students can become engaged during lessons because they want that ability to choose the fun thing at the end of the week.

Gallery walks encourage individual learning as well as collaborative learning because students are to complete assignments by themselves first, and then see how others thought about the same things. Conversations are had to explain ideas to one another.

By having students keep journals, they can confide in their teacher about areas that they are struggling with. Some students may be struggling with main ideas, so if they document it in their journal, you as a teacher can see it and try and help them. By doing this, it can make the student want to be engaged in the lesson so they feel as if they will not be humiliated by their peers.

Both of these are great tools to foster collaborative learning because the work does not all fall on one person. Each member of the group can be held accountable for their portion of the project. If all work is completed, then the other group members can see the thought processes of their peers, and be able to add notes for clarification.

This embodies all aspects of the standard. By giving students the opposing viewpoints, they have to first: form their own opinions, and then share them with others. Depending on the topics, ideas can be shared among a small group first or the whole group. Debates can light a fire under some students because they have a strong opinion on the topic, so they want to be engaged, and then formulating and sharing their thoughts with others encompasses the other parts of the standard.

Number 5 in this list. Not all students learn the same, so a teacher cannot just teach the same way every lesson. Student motivation may suffer because of this if they feel they are not getting anything out of it, so adjusting the instructional strategies might cause an increase in student motivation and engagement.
