Reminders of the Past: Artifacts of Worship invites you to explore the spiritual practices and cultural expressions of three ancient civilizations. We will discuss religious and devotional connection through diverse cultures.

Beginning with the "Venus of Willendorf". This is a small, ancient figure that represents the prehistoric time and stands as a symbol of fertility. This statue was found in Willendorf, Austria during an excavation and is estimated to be from c. 28,000 - 25,000 BCE, the artist is unknown. The material is limestone and stands just over 4 inches tall. Its round shape with large breasts and hips is an emphasis on fertility, while the lack of facial features is a celebration of the universal aspects of the female body.

The "Farnese Heracles" is a Roman marble sculpture that shows the mythological hero Hercules. This is actually a Roman copy of a lost Greek original, created by the famous sculptor Lysippos. This statue powerfully represents Hercules and shows off his superhuman strength and lineage as the son of Zeus. Hercules is seen leaning on his club with the skin of the Nemean Lion he defeated as one of his legendary labors. The sculpture emphasizes the ideal human form, a remembrance of classical art, but also the mythological aspect of heroism and divine connections.

The "Qur'an Manuscript" showcases the importance of calligraphy in the Islamic world. The page features Arabic calligraphy beautifully embellished with gold, and contains verses from the Quran, the holy book of Islam. The art of Quranic calligraphy is a form of devotion and demonstrates the written word. The use of gold emphasizes the sacred nature of the text. This artwork reflects the spiritual connection of the Islamic culture to the Quran and the artistic expressions of devotion in the Islamic world.

Together, these three artworks highlight the diversity in forms, materials, and cultural expressions of worship throughout the ancient world. They offer knowledge into human spirituality and the role that art played in connecting individuals and societies through fertility symbolism, mythological heroism, and religious text.
