What I Have Learned Through My Research & What is Left to Discover

Through my research I have found a multitude of sources that touch on the gendered analysis of fairy tales and a variations of reviews and opinions on the feminism (or lack of) in Beauty and the Beast. I will be utilizing the 1991 animated film and 2017 live-action film production of Beauty and the Beast to compare and contrast how Disney has developed the tale for their respective audiences and times, and whether this “feminist princess” fits into today’s feminist ideology (and if Belle ever did). Through my research thus far I have learned a great deal about how the fairy-tale discourse affect civilization, and female audiences in particular. Many aspects of the tale may confuse young female viewers, as even when a princess is marketed as a strong female character, the narrative still seems to conform to traditional gender roles and toxic situations.

Moving forward in my research I will be looking for feminist and gendered frameworks to apply to Beauty and the Beast. As well as looking into the psychological implications of the tale, as the relationship between the Beast and Belle have been as defined by abusive and manipulative actions, and the suggestion of Stockholm Syndrome. In order to adapt Belle’s character into the today’s socialization and ideology, I think it is important to apply female agency and an understanding of mental health.
