Concrete Rose (Angie Thomas)

This book only came out this year. When it first arrived in the library it quickly got snapped up. A year 9 student recommended the book to me saying "Miss, you have to read it!". I've started reading it and so far I'm enjoying it. The style of writing took a little getting used to - Angie Thomas once again using a narrative voice reflective of the young, black, American protagonist. This book is not suitable for younger readers due to some of the content however older readers will love this book.

The language changes to fit the mannerisms of the character being focused upon.

This book makes me think of a chess match - the characters are all set up like chess pieces, with an unknown player working behind the scenes, moving them and manipulating them. And, just like a chess match, pieces fall. It's very intriguing. Who are these people? Who is the person behind the scenes?
As Sherlock Holmes says...the game's afoot! It does not end until the very last page - a must read for those who enjoy crime novels.

I read this book quite recently and it has managed to make its way up to one of my absolute favorite crime solving and murder mystery books.
This is one of those books that has you hooked from the first page and makes you want to keep reading until you finish it.
The protagonist in this book -Pip- has a school project to do and she picks a missing person's case. The case was closed as the police presumed that the girl who went missing was dead and her killer commit suicide. Pip does not believe this so she decides to try and solve the murder herself.
She has adventures, near death experience and friendship drama all because of a murder.
