Learning Objective 1:- A commentary piece on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie- "The Danger of the Single Story" DATE:- ( 13/09/2017)

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, “The Danger of the Single Story” was productively expounded.

The Nigerian writer spoke about stories she read as a child. She was impacted by these literature writing that African people like herself could not exist in the literature. For example, the book portrayed European people with blue eyes and played in the snow. Chimamanda gave her views on how others one-sided perspective without realizing she did the same. For example, the American debate about immigration or the fact that she despises her yard boy and his family. America deemed her into having a different perspective as compared to what she saw with her own eyes. “The Danger of a Single Story” , spoke about the stereotypes from only having one perspective. In addition, her roommate, for instance, felt a sense of pity and believed she was incompetent. Identically, up to secondary school knowledge, we were taught that the Caribbean was discovered by Christopher Columbus an Italian explorer in 1942. The Europeans brought the genesis of Encomienda and Indentureship system, along with their mass genocide and diseases. This propaganda differs from the tertiary education knowledge educated by Dr.Campbell. The book entailed in-depth documentations and their legacy The Caribbean was originally inhabited by Meso, Paleo, and Neo-Indians for over 5,000 years which the genocide wiped out within 50 years. One of the myths was Caribs (refer to the image below) were warlike. They were misunderstood and considered by Cannibals. Unfortunately, used to make political propaganda to help enslave people. However, they lacked the sufficient archaeological evidence and this course gave the insight to make people aware of their actual history and to longer have a single story perspective on the Carib people.

Culture refers to the beliefs, law, morals, custom or any other capabilities and habits that are practiced by a particular people or society. Comparatively, as learned behavioral patterns and perceptions through enculturation. The Caribbean's culture is dominantly affected by the acculturation of the Europeans which is still present. That is why the Caribbean had the need for its own identity because of the common experiences shared; slavery, indentureship, and colonialism as stated by Karl Marx. Forms of culture; material and nonmaterial culture and different types; high, popular, counterculture and more. During colonialism, black descendants were judged in the stratification system on their skin colour. Europeans used cricket as a tool to suppressive the Africans which held high prestige. Correspondingly, Frank Worrell was the first white captain of the West Indies cricket team. However, as the decades went by, the Caribbean was able to overthrow England through their sport. The previous separation between the white rulers and blacks has diminished and now their aims, values, and clashes in the interactions with one another have changed. This rose awareness and self-consciousness that caused the people of the Caribbean to integrate and refer to themselves as one, West Indies. We all shared common political, cultural and historical similarities. Georgene news reports spoke about the West Indies Cricket team defeating England, the pioneer of Cricket; thanks to Worrell, Weekes, and Walcott (batters) along with Ramadhin and Valentine (bowlers). Subsequently, the Caribbean can no longer view the “mother country” the same. Brian Lara made history by leading his team to victory in the ICC finals and came out on top for the ODI cricket.

Caricom is the Caribbean Community also considered as the “common market”,previously known as Caritifa. It was established in 1973 by the treaty of Chaguaramas. The objective of caricom was to integrate the world market to prosper Caribbean development .The starting objective of the movement of goods among Caricom members allowed the husbanding of resources among ourselves and the wealth would remain among Caricom members. They provided necessary security and further resources in times of disasters for their neighbouring states. Over the years however, in some instance great imbalances have been created. For example Jamaica on a annual basis purchase over two billion worth of Trinidad manufacturer goods with a surplus in trade in excess of one billion. This type of lopsidedness can be found among one or two other trading partners. For instance, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago have had reasons sadly to deport Nationals of other islands who for economic reasons had overstayed their visit. During the years 2002 and 2008 there was idea to promote CSME (Caricom Single Market Economy). However, the idea proved to be stillborn since there were wide gaps in the economy for different nation states and bringing them together as one economy has proven to be a challenge and yet to be overcomed. Caricom thereby caused the initiative subdivisions. Firstly,Organisation of the Eastern Caribbean States, established in 1981 to guide the 7 eastern Caribbean States from their sense of unity. Secondly, Association of Caribbean States, established in 1994 which includes 25 Caribbean nations and becoming the fourth largest trading bloc. Thirdly, Free Trade Areas of America consisting of nation states in the western hemisphere to reduce trade barriers.Thereby concluding, caricom has proven to be beneficial to its members that caricom remains essential and indispensable to the nation states of the Caribbean.

As a person of mixed(Dougla) descent residing in the Caribbean Caribbean civilization enticed me to touch my African roots. The foundation course gave me a different on the history of the Caribbean as it opened my mind to critically analyze the information taught throughout my academic life until University was just propaganda. During my academic year of the fifth form, I did history and at sixth form Caribbean studies. The new profound knowledge taught by Dr.Campbell made me compare what I was taught to my tertiary education. Dr.Campbell’s use of viable resources to prove this with work included for others. The topics discussed in this course from the arrival of Columbus in the Caribbean to Society and Gender roles gave me advanced knowledge especially about the various myths they discussed on the Caribbean. Dr. Campbell made this course interactive by allowing us by use of being in the same classroom with students across the Caribbean and the incorporation of intriguing video presentations and exquisite interpretations. The ability to be able to share ideas, thoughts and different perspective was indeed a brilliant idea. In spite of various challenges, I experienced with the course. For instance, understanding why we were taught a different concept of history, putting together a book report and portfolio for this course and technical difficulties you would receive once in a while. This new knowledge of the Caribbean's history gives us a better understanding to be able to identify with our roots and a better understanding of Caribbean identity. Explaining what is it meant to be apart of the Caribbean. Therefore, I Frankly conclude by stating that this course taught me a lot from the Mondays evening lectures and my tutorial classes. We were able to have an open discussion based on the topics we did on the lecture during the week.
