Monopolies often occurred because of the governments laissez faire attitude. The government wanted to remain hands off businesses. A monopoly occurred during the industrial revolution when the railroads charged farmers excessively because the farmers had no second option.  The farmers created the Populist party due to the railroad monopoly.
