Many people changed from working in agriculture to working in industry. There was a high demand for cheap labor. Children began having to get jobs to help support their family. They endured long hours and harsh working conditions with little pay. Child labor laws were put in place to protect children and there are still many in place today.

Andrew Bessemer's invention played an important role in the Industrial Revolution. In 1865, he invented the Bessemer Process. The invention transformed iron into steel. The steel was better and cheaper. It was helpful because items made from steel, such as bridges, steam engines, trains, and locomotives, could be made quicker and cheaper.

The country was connected from east to west using the Transcontinental Railroad. The Chinese and Irish were credited for constructing it. Time zones were created because of issues that came up with the railroad. Everyone had different local times causing people to be confused on when the train would depart and arrive.

Vocab - Monopoly

A monopoly is when one business has complete control over the goods or services they provide. Monopolies often occurred because of the governments laissez faire attitude. The government wanted to remain hands off businesses. A monopoly occurred during the industrial revolution when the railroads charged farmers excessively because the farmers had no second option. The farmers created the Populist party due to the railroad monopoly. Farmers wanted railroad regulations to be put in place, and monopolies were made illegal.

I think it is interesting that time zones were made because of issues with the railroads. It was unique that every town had there own time. Railroads aren't as important today as they were during the industrial revolution. I did not realize that the railroads were so important that they were the reason we had time zones.
