I cannot agree, nor do I disagree with both Socrates' and Descartes' statements, because I am confused with the statements to begin with, and I think that it is not sensible for me to give an opinion on something I do not understand.

For the implication of the statements, I think that Socrates and Descartes both think that knowing is being, so by knowing something you are being that thing? (sorry if it doesn't make sense, this is very confusing and I don't have a PhD on Philosophy)

Socrates' statement also happens to be a paradox. By knowing that he knows nothing, he doesn't know that he knows nothing, because he knows nothing, but that is not true since he knows that he knows nothing, thus the paradox.

Descartes' statement is a statement created when he tried to create a statement that could not be doubted. He found out that he could not doubt his own existence, as he was the one doing the doubting, so if he wouldn't have existed he wouldn't have been able to doubt it in the first place. But also by existing, he cannot doubt that he existed.

"I know that I know nothing". The ratio of our what we know and what we don't know can possibly be an immense difference. No matter how much we learn and understand, it will always be a limited amount due to the idea that what we don't know is infinite. This saying is a demonstration of Socrates' humility and a paradox where the knowledge you currently have is either insignificant or false compared to the knowledge that we have yet to uncover. We are not capable of understanding the true knowledge of everything due to us potentially misunderstanding it; additionally, knowledge itself is ever-changing. Our current knowledge will be constantly rendered irrelevant and insignificant with the introduction of new knowledge and so on.

I don't really understand what Descartes said, but I think he was trying to say that one's existence is justified due to thoughts based on knowledge.
