Explicit diction: pg 6
" fucking whore, three nights now she doesn't come practice."
- explicit diction is used especially in reference to women. speaking to the way they value or treat them in this time period.

Non Standard English (broken): pg 6
" i wind up gramophone, i get recor ready and i sit and wait" instead of the gramophone or the record
- the broken english represents the lack of education or language barrier/difference between blacks and whites.

Simile: pg 10
"like cats and dogs"

Command : pg 10
" it sounded as if they were telling her to come and fetch him"
- come and fetch instead of come and get him. they're talking about hally's mom and as we know they talk about women in a slightly derogatory manner.

Humor: pg. 12
"i think a vet would be better"
- again referring to women as animals or whores speaking to this time period.

Allusion: pg 14
"...that bad art had to be punished. so six of the best, and his are bloody good".
- here Hally is subtly alluding to his teacher hitting him as punishment. this speaks to the treatment of students and the general treatment of people in this time period. He doesn't have to come out and say it and already everyone knows what he's talking about signifying that this was commonplace and tolerated.

Educated diction: pg 15
"i oscillate between hope and despair..."
- Hally speaks with very eloquent words which demonstrates his education and in contrast to Sam and Willies manner of speaking is much more fluent or sufficient which also speaks to the educational difference between races.

Idiomatic expression: pg 17
"piece of cake".
