A. Aldo Leopold muses on the role of wolves in the ecosystem. Humanity has longed to rid the world of “undesirable” species for centuries; just look at our annoyance at flies and mosquitoes, for example. In Leopold’s case, his role as a hunter meant that he believed wolves to be burdensome creatures that took his prey before he could. However, he comes to realize that even wolves have a place in the ecosystem. In his own hubris, he realized that to get rid of all the wolves is to get rid of all the deer, too.

B. To “think like a mountain” means to look at the bigger picture, so to speak. What could possibly have the biggest picture than Earth’s most elevated landmarks? Therefore, thinking like a mountain means that one must fully understand the way that the ecosystem is balanced…and plan one’s actions accordingly to keep that balance.

1) Aldo Leopoldo eventually realizes that we as humans disrupt nature for our own greedy purposes. Nature has a cycle with a purpose. By humans disrupting nature, we are changing its cycle and only making it worse, even if we think that we are helping it. Everything has a purpose and not to be tolerated with. For example, when he killed the wolves, he later realized how killing the wolves really impacts the ecosystem. He thought that killing the wolves would let there be more deers, but more deers means less nature.

2) To think like a mountain is to observe natures cycle. Letting everything fall into place by its own self, not changing or modifying it.

He saw that without the wolves the deer population ravaged the plant life of the mountain with nothing to keep their population in check and that the wolves were necessary to keep the environment balanced in the mountain range.

B) What I think it means to think like a mountain is to think of the broader picture in a situation and see how one thing could effect many or to see how the effect or loss of one thing would effect everything else in the situation or environment.

Aldo Leopold realized that the wolves were just as crucial the ecosystem as anything else. He realized that killing off a species creates a ripple effect, which can and will damage/change an environment. Without wolves, the deer population skyrocketed, meaning there was an imbalance of animals to plants. This meant that all the plants got eaten, and the mountain was left barren, and without plants. He thought he was helping the deer, but he realized he was harming the mountain in doing so.

Thinking like a mountain means that you look at an ecosystem in its entirety, rather than solely focusing on one species in said ecosystem. Nature has a way of balancing things out, so it is important to understand every outcome before you intervene.
