Norman thinks of himself as perfectly normal, until one day he changes and so does the way he views himself. This teaches a lesson on differences and individuality. Further, it shows children that differences are important to being perfectly individual and also shows that we may not be as different as we think. This book would be appropriate for early elementary school students, especially first and second grade. This story will guide students in identifying characters, events, and reactions. This story has a meaning that is very complex. Students may initially miss the theme of inclusion.
3.RL.KID.3 Describe characters in a story and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.
2.RL.KID.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
https://www.amazon.com/Perfectly-Norman-TOM-PERCIVAL/dp/1408880970

This story shows as a young bird attempts to find his mother, but must encounter many different animals. This story shows that children can be independent, but they can always go home to their parents.

Amelia Bedelia takes things very literally, so she makes a mess when preparing for Great-Aunt Myra's upcoming visit. This is a good book for elementary schoolers, specifically grades first or second. This book is good for lessons of figures of speech and literal language. This story had much repetition which made is only slightly to moderately complex. The use of graphics in this book were very complex because they helped readers to visualize the literal meaning of the phrases.
5.RL.CS.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language with emphasis on similes and metaphors; analyze the impact of sound devices on meaning and tone.
https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/books/thank-you-amelia-bedelia-by-peggy-parish/

A sweet, young wombat tells the story of his "busy week." His story includes his description of how his human neighbors are being trained to give treats. This is a good story for young elementary school students. It would be beneficial to use this book when teaching how to use different genres based on the audience. This story also repeats many words, making it a good resource for practicing reading sight words. This story is only slightly complex, but may be a little difficult for younger students to understand the context behind "training." The story is very repetitive so younger readers should be able to predict and pick up on the concept by the end.
K.FFL.PWR.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills when decoding isolated words and in connected text.
https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/books/diary-of-a-wombat-by-jackie-french/
