I could identify similar experiences I went through as a child. The story describes how the mother has high expectations for her child and was very stern. As I read the story, I compared my own childhood to the author's. As daughter or immigrant parents, I too shared strict parents with high expectations. In the beginning, all the details about Eveline led me to believe that she was going to escape and start a new life with Frank. Eveline dislikes her violent father and she seems miserable trying to maintain a job and help the family, after her mother's death. Even after all of this evidence, she doesn't leave with Frank. A lot of the main character's experiences growing up were similar to mine. The crime, the poor neighborhood, and the friendships were something I could relate to in the story. When the cops were running after the nicer car and the children didn't think much of it, I remembered when I have seen so many police chases that I don't even think much of it to this day. The author writes about how much the father sacrificed for his family that the author felt ungrateful. When I was younger I didn't realize how much my own dad had to endure when he had to work at four in the morning to go to his construction job. Now, as an adult, I can understand how much that affected him. It was very easy to be upset with Troy in the beginning. He was hard on his son and didn't want him to be a professional football player. Troy also had an affair and had a child with the other woman. After continuing to read the play, you start to understand why he acted that way. My original perspective at the beginning of the show, I thought the main characters were irrational and too emotional to make good decisions. As the show progressed, I discovered that the show was advocating for strong women. Feminism and strong women leads led me to change my original opinion.
