"Everything tasted like ashes lately", Pg. 5
From reading the last book, I know from background knowledge on the book that when Grisha don't use their powers, the become sickly. Since Alina has left Ravka and can't let others find her powers, I believe that she is back to her old self, where she is a skinny frail girl.

" 'You remember Jes, right?' " Pg. 10
Jes or Jesper was a character from the book Six of Crows (The sequel to the trilogy). He was Zemeni, just like this Jes, and because I know Six of Crows was set a few years later, this could possibly be the same Jesper.

"So this must be Sturmhond. He looked to young to be a captain of anything." Pg. 36
Sturmhond, the privateer, was also in Crooked Kingdom (The sequel to Six of Crows). He was told to be King Nikolai. In these books, it tells us that the king is a boy. My prediction is that Sturmhond was present for both books and is truly King Nikolai. It just so happens that that pays no relevance to the story right now.

Because of the past 2 comments, I am hoping maybe to learn more about other characters from Six of Crows, maybe perhaps Kaz or Inej or even fighting against Matthias and Fjerda. That could lead to a very confusing timeline that would be fun to piece together. All in all, I believe that the 2 series tie well together and I wish Leigh Bardugo would continue the Six of Crows series.

"The cemeteries were as big as the towns." Pg. 173
This shows how many people died in the war or how long and difficult this war is for the country, how it is weakening them. The statement is depressing and makes the chapter heavier on the readers shoulders.

" 'Spoken like a man who's never had nothing' " Pg. 174
Nikolai is a soldier, a prince, and a sailor. To say he's never had nothing is true, because he has been pampered from being a prince. But he has been a soldier which is good because he did understand what it is like to be on the edge, to be risking everything. By being a sailor he understands what it is like to have a crew, to go through to ordeals and challenges faced along the sea. Altogether, I think it is unwise to say this only because nobody has ever experienced nothing, especially Nikolai.

" 'Just be careful who you trust.' I cast a pointed glance at him. 'I will' " Pg. 205
Because Nikolai is a powerful alliance and deadly, too, I think she (Alina) is questioning whether to trust him or not. Last time she trusted the Darkling, she ended up starting a sort of civil war between the Grisha. I think she may feel that this is quite a similar situation and should be dealt with in a different manner to prevent more war.
