at the very beginning of the story, it says, “ It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see.” To me, this resembles a journal. some people collect their daily their daily thoughts in a journal at the end of the day. but, everyone has their own interpretation of how their day went. in anthem, no one is allowed to think and write what others don’t. so there is a lack of originality altogether as well as a lack of self. the people can’t think for themselves and can’t even have their own name.

Children are taught to live and die by the brotherhood, and our told that the existence of the brotherhood is above all else. The people in Anthem's world cannot have any preference of job or people, their entire existence revolves around the group. The individual is nothing compared to the group and is treated as such. The quote "we are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, Indivisible and forever." shows this teaching (pg.19)

They are not allowed to value others more than anyone else and they are also not allowed to express themselves as individuals in anyway. Their sleeping halls are described as”white and cleanand bare of all things save one hundred beds” (Rand 20). This shows how they are not allowed to be any different from their fellow brother.

Throughout the Novel Collectivism is shown as being so Selfless that people are told not to think for themselves or about themselves. They are told to be exactly like everyone else and that being different is bad. Anthem also suppresses individualism by not letting people decide where they want to work and not letting them do what they want to do. Another way Anthem suppresses individualism is by not letting people live long lives, and by letting the state decide how everyone lives their life.

They also have to allows be happy which keeps them from having individual emotions. Also, they have to care for each person the same which keeps them from having individual relationships with others. They are also forced into a certain job which keeps them from showing their individual skills since they are all doing the same things.

As mentioned in the novel "This is a great sin, to be born with a head too quick. It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior to them." (Rand 21) The students are not allowed to understand things easily, and absorb things at their own pace. This is shown on pg. 17, " It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see." The following example proves that in collectivism you are not allowed to have your own thoughts and opinions that set you apart from everyone else.

The lack of self can be shown in the novel when it reads ¨And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone¨ (Rand 17). This is saying that there is no greater offense than to be one. You can be by yourself, or even express your own thoughts and individualism.

There is no identification to each individual which shows no independence or individuality. For example, in the story they have no actual names that separate them from the rest. They’re jobs are handed to them not based off skill, or individual achievement. Their jobs are given randomly and without thought. A quote that backs this up is near the very beginning of the book; this quote states, “The laws say that none among men may be alone, ever and at any time...”. This shows that there is no individuality amongst all of the people nor is it allowed.

The lack of self is shown in many ways but the most common one we see is the lack of names. Nobody has a name only a word with 5 numbers following afterwards. For example, "Equality 7-2521." Another that is shown is when it says no one is allowed to think alone or work for themselves. In the novel it says, "It is a sin to think words no others think ..." (Rand 17).

People are forced to work for each other and if they do not serve this one purpose they will be removed from society (presumably by death). Being able to have an opinion or want something that can not be shared with their brothers is a sin. They are not allowed to be anything but happy but they cannot be happier than their brothers. Only the council can decide what happens in a person’s life. Not being able to live past the age of forty-five (if lucky) also seems like something controlled by the council.
