People would be put in a room with a bucket and a wooden bench to sit on, in the dark. It was hard to escape. This was founded as a Russian Orthodox monastery. 
Following the October revolution in 1917, the monastery was converted into a Prison to hold “enemies of the revolution”. During the 1930s and 1940s it functioned  as a penal colony for victims of the purges of Joseph Stalin.
