Chester Southam, a virologist, was concerned in the 1950s that contact with HeLa cells would infect researchers with cancer. To put this to the test, he inserted HeLa cells into the arms of cancer patients while claiming to be conducting an immune system test. On the patients' arms, lumps formed. 

In 1963, he organized for similar experiments to be continued at the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital in Brooklyn. Three Jewish doctors, however, refused to participate, contrasting this research to the trials of Nazi doctors at Nuremberg. 

Despite the fact that several doctors testified in support of Southam and Mandel, the hospital’s director of medicine, the Board of Regents called for more explicit ethical rules for research. Southam and Mandel were sentenced to one year of probation.

Joe struggled in prison until he began reading the Koran and embraced islam, changing his name to Zakariyya Bari Abdul Rahman. Deborah, on the other hand, was going on with her life and eventually married Alfred, the father of her child. He would beat her when high on drugs, so she struck back by stabbing him in the chest with a knife as a warning. Deborah was persuaded by Bobbette that leaving the house was preferable to killing Alfred directly.
