Not surprising but shocking is the absences of the concern for the plight of those being affected the most. This along with the seemingly complacency of those who should and can intervene being the public institutions, established local agencies and both state and federal governmental departments. You discuss significant challenges that act as barriers to success without attacking a system or group of people. It can be hard to discuss these topics without people feeling responsible for issues of inequity. But you address it head on as a reality that is impacting the success of your community. Loved the resources included. I was also impressed with how you simultaneously addressed individual and  systems level issues.

I definitely agree with Barbara in that it breaks down the science well. Unfortunately none of it surprised me, probably because I'm familiar with so much of it.  I'm not sure what's missing, maybe something about resilience? I think you should check out the Youth Thrive framework out of the Center for the Study of Social Policy.

Sunindiya]]> 2018-03-21 23:46:11 UTC https://padlet.com/s_saeugling/fq7nw3edgjwk/wish/244793434 Restorative Practice https://padlet.com/s_saeugling/fq7nw3edgjwk/wish/247906215 This is a really well thought out and presented piece.  I am looking forward to continuing to engage with it.  The systems approach is crucial.  The resources are fantastic as background and support to your theories; the local stories provide a window and a way to visualize the theory, which is very important. 

 I wanted to add a thought as to possible inputs, especially one that we have found to have profound impact at several key "junctures" in the system; that is restorative justice practices as an approach to community healing and building. We are using these practices and structures at both the DreamYard High School and at our Art Center- there is something there that breaks cycles. These practices resonate very powerfully with creative approaches to teaching and learning, and with social justice pedagogy. I would love to discuss these intersections with you both at some point. Well done. I appreciate the multiple loops identified and concisely named, which really helps show the complexity of this challenge. I was perhaps surprised by the additional depth provided by showing so many interrelated loops. Lots of intense thinking! While I have a lot of familiarity with ACEs (WA state was a leader through its Community Networks), right now I'm working in food systems and am envious of your Kumu skills. How did you develop your competency? I'm working in Kumu, making progress and learning, but would really like to increase my skills.
