What effect does artificial light have on evening make up

Under artificial light shadows are often cast and colours change or disappear. Evening make-up needs to consist of stronger colours creating depth thus defining the eyes, lips and mouth.
When applying evening makeup, a clear white light should be used and bear in mind the effects that different lighting will have on the look of the makeup.

There are 4 different types of lighting which affects makeup in different ways.

WHITE LIGHT (NATURAL LIGHT) – Contains all the color of the rainbow. When white light falls on an object some colors are absorbed and others reflected. It’s the reflected colors that we see. If makeup is done in the daylight, use subtle colors as less is more during the day.

FLUORESCENT LIGHT – Found in office spaces or schools. This contains excess of blue and green, which have a cooling effect on the makeup: the red in the face doesn’t show up and the face can look drained of color. Reds and yellows should be avoided, as these will not show up, blues will. Also don’t apply dark colors, the fluorescent light intensifies these.

INCADESCENT LIGHT – Lights produces by filament lamps (normal yellow type bulbs you find). This produces an excess of red and yellow light, which creates a warm flattering effect. Almost all colors can be used with this lighting, except that brown and purples may appear darker than what they are. Choose a lighter foundation than normal to reflect the light, and use frosted highlighting products where possible for the same reason.

Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibres in the skin called elastin. When these fibres break down, the skin begins to sag, stretch and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching. The skin also bruises and tears more easily - and takes longer to heal. So while sun damage to the skin may not be apparent when you’re young, it will definitely show later in life.

How does the sun change my skin?
Exposure to the sun causes:

Pre- cancerous ( actinic keratosis) and cancerous ( basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma) skin lesions

Benign tumours

Fine and coarse wrinkles

Freckles

Discoloured areas of the skin, called mottled pigmentation

Sallowness - a yellow discolouration of the skin

Telangiectasias - the dilation of small blood vessels under the skin

Elastosis - the destruction of the elastic tissue, causing lines and wrinkles

Tinted Moisturizer

Tinted moisturizer provides light coverage and will cover up some unevenness, but is best for women with pretty good skin. It's truly a moisturizer with a wash of sheer color. It works as a 2-in-1 (sometimes 3-in-1 if it contains SPF) makeup product because it moisturizes while providing an all-over sheer color.

Oil-based Foundation Makeup

Oil-based foundations add moisture and tend to temporarily "plump up" skin, making them a great foundation choice for anyone with dry skin and for older women who want to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

You'll want to shake up the bottle before use because the oil will separate in the bottle

Sheer Foundation

If you are seeking a foundation that glides on smoothly, giving skin the appearance of having no foundation on at all, sheer foundation is a great bet. The coverage is light, so it won't give you what I call "cake face" if you apply too liberally. It tends to be buildable if you do want more doverage.

Sheer foundation is made with silicones and works best on women with normal to dry skin. Many sheer foundations today contain SPF, which gives you the added benefit of sun protection, but I always recommend supplementing with a sunscreen of at least SPF 40

Matte, or "Oil-free," Foundation

Created for women with oily skin, matte (also marketed as "oil-free") foundations are formulated with water and not oil. They tend to dry quickly, so you will want to blend it in with a sponge or your fingers as soon as you apply. And always use moisturizer or foundation primer first to add an extra layer of moisturizer.

Mousse or Whipped Foundation

Mousse -- also marketed as "whipped foundation" -- is liquid makeup with air whipped in. This makes the product light and smooth. Mousse foundations tend to have a perfect matte finish and a weightless feel.

Whipped foundation is typically good for all skin types, but I find it's great for those with dry or mature skin because of its tendency to go on smoothly instead of caking up

Stick Foundation

Stick foundations are portable so you never have to worry about spills in your purse or bag. The coverage tends to be heavier, making them perfect for covering up blemishes, scars, reddened areas and dark under-eye circles.

Stick foundations are best for normal to oily skin. If you have dry skin, make sure to apply a bit of moisturizer first because stick foundations can cake up on you. This is why I recommend using stick foundations only on your problem areas, leaving the rest of your face to regular liquid or cream foundation.

This is not a great option for mature skin. Stick foundation is simply too heavy for fine lines and wrinkles.

Powder (or Compact) Foundation

Powder foundation comes in compact form, so it makes a great foundation for women who want on-the-go portability. It's basically a powder and foundation in one and you can get it in several formulations, but it's really best for women with oily skin.

Skip this if you have dry or mature skin.

For women interested in natural, organic makeup, mineral foundation is your absolute best bet. Mineral makeup is made up almost always primarily of minerals, which come from nature. It's a great bet for women with sensitive skin or allergies. And it's a great bet for older women with fine lines and wrinkles.

Shimmer Foundation

Shimmer foundations contain ingredients that add a dewiness to skin. Laura Mercier has a great illuminating tinted moisturizer, but I found it works best as a highlighter instead of for overall coverage. Buy in a shade lighter than your skin tone and apply only to those areas where you want to achieve brightness: above your brows, on the cheeks and the tip of the nose. Buy it online
Waterproof Foundation

Waterproof foundation is made to stay on for a long time, which makes it perfect for humid areas and hot days. It also means you may not be able to remove it with just cleanser and water, you may need to use makeup remover. These foundations can clog up pores and you may be more susceptible to blackheads, so I wouldn't use this foundation daily

Highlighting emphasizes a feature
◾Shadowing minimizes a feature, making it less noticeable
◾Blend, blend, blend your makeup to create a seamless transformation between corrected areas
Round or Square Face: Blend a darker foundation on the outer edges of temples, then along the cheekbones and jawline. Use lighter foundation along the center of the face, from the forehead to the tip of your chin.

Narrow Face: Use a light foundation on the outer edges of your cheekbones.

Wide Jaw: Use a darker foundation below the cheekbones and alongside the jawline.

Receding Chin: Use a lighter foundation to highlight the chin.

Double Chin: Use a darker foundation to shade under the jawline and over the double chin.

To Get the “Ideal” Brow

Draw three imaginary lines:
1.A vertical line alongside the inner corner of the eye and side of nose (this is where the inner brow should end)
2.A vertical line on the outside edge of the iris (this is where the highest point of the arch should be)
3.A diagonal line starting at one corner of the nose and crossing the outer corner of the eye on the same side (line will extend past the brow to indicate where the brow should end)

Corrective Makeup Tips for Eyebrows
◾High arches make your face appear more narrow, which could be a good thing for a round face, but not as desirable for a face that’s already very narrow. To adjust a high arch, remove extra hair from its top and fill-in under the eyebrow with pencil or shadow.
◾Add visual height to a low forehead by decreasing the arch.
◾Make your eyes appear farther apart by widening the distance between the brows and extending the brows slightly outward.

Corrective Makeup Techniques for Lips
◾Make a thin upper lip appear fuller by lining it with a lip lining pencil (stay on the outermost area of the lip — extending too far looks artificial) and then filling in with lip color; reverse the procedure for a thin lower lip
◾When both lips are thin, line both with a pencil (do not go far past the natural lip line) and fill in with light lipstick to make lips appear larger
◾Too-full lips: use a lip liner to draw a line just inside the natural lip line; fill in with soft colors, avoiding frosty or glossy lipsticks that attract attention
◾Drooping corners: line the lips, focusing on building up the corners; fill in with a soft color.

Makeup Tips from the Experts

Makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin recommends using a concealer over the edges of lips before enhancing their shape.

From Bobbi Brown, about the disappearing lips older women must sometimes contend with: “Stick to light-to-medium shades of lipstick and gloss, which will make your lips stand out. Choose creamy, shiny formulas; they reflect light, creating the illusion of fullness. Finally, strengthen your lip line by tracing the outer edge of your natural border using a liner that’s one shade deeper than your lip color. Don’t go crazy for fuller lips: Drawing outside your mouth will only make you look like you’re auditioning for Broadway

TASK - what effect does artificial light have on evening make up

1. Daylight
When white light falls on an object, it absorbs some color and reflect other color; it is the reflected color that we see. Thus, an object that we see as red is an object that absorbs the colors in white light except red. A White object that reflect most of the light that fall upon it; a black object absorbs most of the light that fall on it.Subtle colors should be chosen as daylight intensives color

2. Incandescent light
Evening make-up is usually seen in incandescent light; produced by filament lamp. This produces an excess of red and yellow light, which create a warm, flattering effect. Almost all colors can be use in this light, except that brown and purples will appear darker. Choose a lighter foundation than normal to reflect the light, and use frosted high lighting products where possible for the same reason. Evening make-up will appear very obvious and dramatic in daylightBrown and purple should be avoided, as these will appear darker. Most other color can be worn

3. Fluorescent light
If make-up is to be worn in the office, it will probably be seen under fluorescent light. This contain an excess of blue and green, which have a cool effect on the make-up, the red in the face does not show up and the face can look drained of color.Red, yellow and dark colors should be avoided as fluorescent light intensive them; blue tones should be chosen

TASK 9 - difference between daylight, flurescent & filament lighting

The two most common types of lighting fixtures today are incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps. Incandescent bulbs are rather old and outdated while fluorescent lamps are relatively new and is replacing incandescent bulbs in a lot of applications. The biggest difference between the two is in how they produce light. Incandescent bulbs produce light by a heating a metallic filament until it starts to radiate light. On the other hand, fluorescent lamps produce light by exciting a gas and causing it to glow.

The newer and more technologically advanced fluorescent lamps have better characteristics compared to incandescent bulbs, the most important of which is efficiency. In order to produce the same amount of illumination as a fluorescent lamp, an incandescent bulb consumes anywhere from 4 to 8 times as much power. Much of the wasted power in incandescent bulbs turns to heat. Although the generation of heat is sometimes desirable, like in incubators, it is often just a waste of energy and money.

Another key problem of incandescent bulbs is their relatively short lifetime. Although improvements have been made to increase its lifespan, the filament still burns out pretty quickly. Fluorescent lamps last much longer than an incandescent bulb, making them preferable since you would not need to change them as often.

To improve or alter facial structure for stage or screen, you must understand the principles of shading and highlighting and how they work under lighting. Shade a feature to make it less noticeable; highlight to draw attention to it. Shade with dark colors, and highlight with very pale colors. It is best to shade first and then highlight. Simple improvements can be done with powder shaders; use creams or grease liners for precision work. Grayish-brown tones are best for shading white skins, and dark browns and black for brown skins. Apply shading with a brush, using a little at a time, but blend with fingertips. Highlighting is done with creams or grease liners. White alone is too strong unless you are using a very pale base or an unusual color, but do not use too much. Without highlights, shading has little effect.•
