Caden was a sophomore in high school who just started showing signs of Schizophrenia. Family, friends, and teachers began to notice a change in Caden’s behavior. He became quickly became withdrawn, he had lost focus in school and assignments, and he has had a sudden paranoia to those around him. 
      Not only has Caden shown signs of this mental illness he has begun to feel the effects of schizophrenia. Caden often finds him self imagining he is on a ship at sea. On this ship Caden is one of the crew members, Caden takes orders and follows what ever the captain of the ship says. Caden's thoughts are constantly caught up in the ship. 
It is not until Caden begins to tell his parents about his paranoia that his parents decide to get some help. Caden was checked into a physic ward at the hospital. For the next nine weeks Caden learns about his mental illness while also living among others that experience the same thing. He is put in group therapy session and is put on medication to numb the hallucinations. He meets his therapist who really helped Caden grow to get help. I personally am so interested in mental health and mental illness especially in younger students and in teenagers. 
     I have always struggled with my mental health since I was in high school. Though my mental health never reached the severity of a stay at a physic ward I could relate to a lot of the feelings that Caden had in in school and at home. 
     I also have a cousin who was diagnosed with schizophrenia around the age of 16. A lot of the things that Caden ended up saying to his parents about what he thought and what he was feeling was almost exactly what my cousin experienced. Once Caden was discharged from the hospital he had missed so much school that it was summer. He was not able to finish out the school year and he had to find an alternative time to complete the end of sophomore year.
          This will defiantly happen while I am teacher and it is important for me to be adaptable and able to help students struggling with mental illness.

  • Schizophrenia affects about 2.4 million Americans.
  • Those with schizophrenia usually do not experience symptoms until over the age of 12 and it is hard to identify the early phases of Schizophrenia. 
  • Schizophrenia is genetic. It is helpful information to know that it runs in the family so you can watch for possible warning signs of Schizophrenia.

    • I will also be definitely seeing other mental illnesses in the class room so it is important for teachers, parents, and other school administrators to know the signs of mental illnesses so that they can help students earlier. Most adults that experience mental illness feel the effects of it by age 14.

There are way too many students that struggle with mental health that do not have the resources.
    I also think that there could be a screening made at schools that checks in with the students every few weeks or months.
