Pg. 124
"’How is your father?’ Obierika asked, not knowing what else to say. ‘I don’t know. He is not my father,’ said Nwoye, unhappily.” This quote shows that because Okonkwo’s interpretation of masculinity and power is harsh and too strict, it pushes Nwoye away. It distances Okonkwo from unity.

Pg. 134
"Living fire begets cold impotent ash." In this quote, Okonkwo realizes how hungry he is for power and how he wants to enforce his masculinity on others. He also realizes that because of this he distances himself from being truthful to himself.

Pg. 132
“He seized a heavy stick that lay on the dwarf wall and hit him two or three savage blows." This quote shows that Okonkwo feels uncomfortable showing vulnerability. He sees vulnerability as a weakness so therefor he must keep up his masculinity. He uses his masculinity as a mask and a shield to protect him from ridicule and reality. He distances himself from reality by putting up a wall of masculinity.

Pg. 153
"There were many men and women in Umuofia who did not feel as strongly as Okonkwo about the new dispensation." Okonkwo finds out in this quote that he is somewhat alone because he tries to stand strong to his beliefs of masculinity and power. He is no longer supported by all and is now slowly losing his power and possibly his masculinity too. He distances himself from unity once again by trying to remain loyal to his old ways.

Violent masculinity and patriarchy in South Africa

In this video Raymond Suttner states that men are expected to be brave, strong, and violent in many societies. Where men are supposed to be strong and violent, women are supposed to be gentle and emotional. Suttner believes that both men and women should be strong and gentle as well as being brave and emotional. Strong men should be emotional too. South Africa was born out of violence, so South African boys and men are taught that the men before them survived by using violence. They then feel obligated to follow in their footsteps.

In this controversial commercial it is stated that "The boys watching today will be the men of tomorrow. This reminded me of how the way Okonkwo and the other men acted would be passed down to the boys that watched them act that way, and how the boys were too frightened to hold them accountable for their actions.
