Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is located south of Italy and is separated from the peninsula by the Strait of Messina, which is approximately 3 km wide. To the east, the island overlooks the Ionian Sea, while to the west it is bathed by the Strait of Sicily, which separates it from Tunisia. To the south, the Sea of Sicily connects it to Libya. Its central position in the Mediterranean has made Sicily a crossroads of cultures, with historical influences from the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans and Spanish. Among its most notable features is the active volcano Etna, located on the east coast. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters, while the varied landscape, including mountains, plains and coasts, contributes to its natural beauty.Palermo, the capital of Sicily, is a city rich in history and culture, founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC, with a population of around 700,000 inhabitants. The city is famous for its monuments, including churches, palaces, and mosaics that reflect the Arab and Norman influences. The historic center, with Norman and Eastern architecture, is characterized by parks, historic gardens, and lively markets, such as the Ballarò Market. Among the most important landmarks are the Cathedral, the Royal Palace, the Palatine Chapel, and the Botanical Garden. Palermo is also known for its climate, tropical vegetation, and vibrant city life. Since 2015, it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.Sicilian cuisine is rich in tasty and diverse dishes, influenced by the various cultures that have passed through the island. It is worth mentioning “u’ Fistinu” or the feast of Santa Rosalia which takes place on 14 and 15 July in Palermo, in memory of the liberation from the plague in 1624 through the intercession of the “Santuzza”.
