Poem: " I, too, sing America" by Langston Hughes

Analysis:

The speaker: Could be the author; Hughes; because it is a very personal poem.

Theme: The pricipal theme alludes the racial segregation during the early 20th century, when African Americans faced discrimination in nearly every aspect of their lives. For example they were forced to work as slaves, had few civil rights, and they were often victims of racial violence. However he proclaims that "tomorrow he will join the others at the table and no one will dare send him back to the kitchen” as hopeful statement to be treated equally; the author want to demostrate that African Americans are a valuable as all the country’s population.

Symbols:

· The table and the kitchen: A hopeful idea of one day they will be treat with the same rights.

· A wall: When the speaker refers that they are separated from others (white people)

Personification:

· “I, too, sing America”: It means that all the people are equal, the speaker want to express that the black man is also an American citizen.

· “And be ashamed I, too, am America”: The speaker want to express how white people react when they are close and share their right with black people.

Metaphor:

· “I am the dark brother”:

· “They will see how beautiful I am”: It means that black people are proud about whom they are; and also they want to demonstrate that white people will see them with value and will treat them with equality.

What ethnic group does that literary work belong to?

This poem is Afro-American literary work; it refers to black people who live in the U.S.

What characteristics of that ethnic literature does the literary work chosen have?

1. This poem develops themes of ethnic such as prejudice, discrimination and racism.
2. The speaker wants to express the ideas of a group of people by sharing their cultural heritage and the pride of their roots
3. Also this poem identifies people who feel somehow marginal to the American cultural society.

Did you like the literary work that you chose? Why?

Lately I have been profoundly despondent by everything that is happening in the world. In this days I have seen the reality of hate especially in racism; thus a few days ago I read the poem "I, too, sing America" by Langston Hughes and I chose it for my work because I loved it. The author express all the feeling that I feel today: I want us all to understand that we are loved and equal, not matter your skin, race, religion, or gender; we all deserve the respect because we are human beings. The world nee more love and less hate; so I share this poem with you because it is full of love and hopeful. No more racism.
