He was Deaf at birth from rubella, while his parents were both hearing. He uses his 5% residual hearing to help him speak and is a fluent lip-reader. When he was 2 years old he and his family moved to Silver Spring, Maryland. He developed oral skills early in his life and was enrolled in Montgomery County Public school auditory infant program. He was then “mainstreamed” into the local school system from 7th grade until he graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1986. He excelled in baseball, basketball, and soccer while he was in high school. When he graduated high school, he attended the college of William and Mary and was the starting point guard on their basketball team.
