"We no longer live in those sweet, slow days when life felt predictable, when we actually knew what to do next."
This line is hard for me. These "sweet, slow days when life felt predictable" never have existed in the US. If there is an illusion of these days for some people, it's clear that they have not existed for all groups in the US. First peoples and black Americans have a history that does not reflect the idea of the "good old days." Still, there are many golden lines in this article about how importatnt it is to really listen to understand and how much we need each other. I couldn't agree more. In community and solidarity I find hope!

As I've gotten older, I've had to make harder decisions, and even when I plan for something to go one way, it oftentimes doesn't. Life isn't so predictable anymore in my case, but that's okay!

When all we think about is what we already know, we are not expanding our minds and values. But this quote perfectly explains how special it is when we learn something new that surprises us.

"There are many ways to sit and listen for the differences"
I chose this sentence because I believe is a true argument. This sentence reflects the importance of listening. It is essential we listen, just as we would like someone to listen to us. Sometimes we do not like to hear when we are not agree with. However, if we listen, we can make a difference because we share ideas, and opinions. As it mention in the article "is time to begin asking others what they see and think" Which means that we need to listen new ideas, but first we need to make the space and way to listen.

"Noticing what surprises and disturbs me has been a very useful way to see
invisible beliefs."

It's so true that we all have beliefs and ways of thinking that we ourselves are not aware of. I think that when you hear something that either surprises or disturbs you, it is an indication of your beliefs, views, or perspective being shaken up a bit. Most of the time, that feeling is uncomfortable so a lot of people will just disagree with what they just heard or try to disprove it. Instead, I think it is mature to learn to listen and be okay with questioning why you believe what you believe.

This would lead me to have an unfair view of the person and somehow dislike them for it. As I have matured, I have come to change my thinking and actually be curious and willing to listen to others. With the state of our world and political climate, I think it's important to train ourselves and the next generation on how to be good listeners and good communicators. That is why this sentence hit home with me because I have come a long way in my personal battles!

We live in such a world where judgmental comments come before knowing someone true self. I often times meet new people and they tell me "omg you're so nice I always thought you were mean". We are so concerned in how fast we can get information we don't really take the time to listen or hear the information we are getting or gathering. My son is currently getting behavioral therapy, and the therapist is teaching him to say, " I don't know." I had never realized that I hadn't taught him to say that. I feel like I had, but who wants to admit they don't know something? When he's asked a question, he always answers with something. Even if it has nothing to do with what you asked him. Just like my son, I need to admit when I don't know something.

"Because we live in different parts of the complexity, and because no two people are physically identical, we each experience life differently."

I chose this phrase because I have always had the philosophy that unless the person has had lived the experience or something similar, it is hard to understand what the person has gone through. This correlates with the thought of that everyone just listens to determine if they feel the same, without ever truly putting themselves in that person's shoes. In my personal experience with losing a best friend, no one can truly understand the pain unless they have gone through it. Many people were there to offer their condolences, but my friends thought I was ridiculous when I still cried months later for him, until they lost a relative is when they realized my pain. It is always important to truly understand the story when you are listening, instead of saying only what the person wants to hear at that moment.

I love learning and experiencing new things especially cultural things. This week I learned something about one of my childhood heroes, Kobe Bryant. Many times, people are quick to stereotype others before giving them a chance. If we get the opportunity to talk to others with an open mind and heart, we may realize that we have many things in common. We often worry too much about being good speakers, but we should also focus on being good listeners.
