The teacher also compares new vocabulary words to old ones to help with comprehension. Lastly, she creates motions for every vocabulary word she introduces. This action helps students to comprehend.

If the children don't know the word, she puts it in a sentence to see if they can recall it that way. She also helped the children sound out the word if it was one they had never encountered before. This teacher, instead of just telling her students a definition for them to memorize she used the word in a situation first so they can make their assumptions on what the word means.

A few things I learned about Vocabulary Instruction is that it is more effective than having students just copy the definitions from the dictionary. Vocabulary instruction consists of teaching students Word Meanings, which refers to thinking deeply about word meanings, acting out the meaning of the word, drawing pictures, create a symbol, and find a real word example. There are sometimes multiple meanings of one word, and as school and life goes on, we experience those meanings more often. It is important to get the full concept of different meanings through explicit Vocabulary Instruction so that students are set up for success for connecting words and providing the opportunities to use more words over time.
