         <description><![CDATA[<div>Master Jefferson started losing money. Harriet turned 13 in the spring she wasn't a lady but she was close next year Maddie would be apprenticed to uncle John like Beverly Maddie over here with Miss Martha phone with Cornelia talking in the school room miss Cornelia asked Miss Martha if she can have a maid. She asked specifically for Harriet. Three days later Harriet started working in the textile factory. Master Jefferson was proud of his little factory.&nbsp;Beverly said he would pay Aston a penny if he played money musk on the violin. Maddie feels left out because when he's older he knows that everyone would leave without him.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Mr. Bacon, the overseer, to tell everyone that James is going to Edgehill Mr. Randolph's farm. Edith, Beverly, Maddy and Sally are all powerless to help him. Maddy wasn't sure who hated more, his mother or Master Jefferson. Maddy and Beverly talk about all the slaves that got sold. Maddy understands that Master Jefferson is unfair. Joe Foscett tells Maddy that he's going to miss his son. It connects everyone because they all feel the same way. Maddy talks to Joe faucet and learns that some of Joe Foscett's kin became free; his mama, Sally, his sister and Robert, his brother. He and his sister went back to Monticello. Joe has a hard time believing James got sold. Harriet explains to Maddy that he doesn't have any say or choice. She asks him " What do you think slavery is?" Harriet tells Maddy to ask Mama about her 11 brothers and sisters. </div>]]></description>

Along the way, they have a conversation about breaking the rules, "A black person who doesn't follow the rules is a dangerous man in a white person's eyes and doesn't live long."(pg.248). He tells beverly&nbsp; that he needs to be white inside and out.&nbsp;<br><br>Maddy's turning point is when he cuts himself and T.J. takes care of him.
