What is a seed bank and its importance?

Repositories of agricultural genetic diversity data are known as the seed banks. This conservation technique ensures that the evolutionary potential is preserved without the need for cultivation and the crop evolution history could be remembered and restored through this strategy (Peres, 2016). A study by Bossuyt and Honnay (2008), reported that these can be utilized in ecological restoration depending on the target species’ richness, evenness and diversity and the habitat, however, it should not solely rely on the seed bank, it is highly recommended that close supervision is imposed.

Community seed banks benefit the agriculture sector in different ways such as the genetic variability of crops, allowing them to adapt to the changing growth environment as well as the guaranteed supply of healthy seeds. This arose as a result of a collaborative effort to improve local capacity to utilize, protect, and enhance crop genetic resources. With the assistance of international and national non-governmental groups, the community seed banks were established around the late 1980’s (Mulesa & Ortiz, 2015). In the Philippines, a P192-million community seed bank and seed production program was initiated by the Department of Agriculture to help farmers meet their certified seed needs every cropping season. It will also encourage organized farmers’ groups and organizations such as the Irrigators’ Association to create their local certified and local inbred rice seeds from the authorised rice seeds that would be provided to the communities (Philstar Global, 2011).

References:

Journal:

Bossuyt, B., & Honnay, O.

In the Rizal rainforests, the Masungi Georeserve is a conservation area and a rustic rock garden. Masungi gets its name from the word "masungki," which means "spiked," which is a good description of the expansive limestone landscape found there. The georeserve has been protected for nearly two decades. It's been a challenge dealing with a slew of illegal loggers, quarries, and other problems, but it's been worthwhile and rewarding in the end. Masungi is now a nature refuge for hundreds of different types of natural animals (Masungi Georeserve, n.d.).

References:

Award-winning Conservation Project: Day Trip from Manila.
Why Masungi Georeserve and the 10 native plant species?

During the 1990s to present, the masungi georeserve was subjected to illegal loggers which have made a negative impact on the area, resulting in adverse effects to its biodiversity (Aquino & Rivera, 2021). Preserving and imparting sustainable practices is highly urged to be able to preserve the said area, seed banks could be of aid in order to address the conservation of its endemic plant species (Van, 2003; León-Lobos et al., 2010). Aside from this, we personally chose this plant area and the following native plant species in order to encourage people about the biodiversity and environmental management of the area as native plants also serve as food to the wildlife and a lovely part of the scenery which adds to the visual value of the area.

References:
León-Lobos, P., Way, M., Rosas, M., Sandoval, A., & Pritchard, H.
