In between meals, it is also important to snacking if you are taking medication, or else it could cause reduction in blood sugar level which then can lead to hypoglycemia. However, oversnacking or taking snack more than requirements is also not good, so here are few suggestions for diabetic patients:
- Snacking only when you are truly hungry in between mealtime, not craving.
- Always watch for ingredients, and calories level. It is better to keep taking snacks with 150 calories and below.
- Avoid taking carbohydrates since it is the major culprits of raising blood sugar.
- It is really advisable to snack on fruits or vegetables.
- Put snacks on a small portion plate to prevent from overtaking it.
- If you are in crave of some types of food, maybe snack swaps is advisable, in which for example junkfood should be replaced by a more healthier kind of diet.

Examples of food:
- Fruits (such as apples, raisins, grapes and etc.)
- Nuts (almonds and seed mix etc.)
- Bread sticks (not to be taken in high amount, preferably less than 4)
- Yogurt
- Boiled egg
- Low-fat and less sugar kind of food

Protein Yoww

Within the diabetes community, it often seems that protein is the forgotten macronutrient. To the extent that protein barely gets any attention, it’s generally thought of as a good or neutral dietary component. However, consuming more protein can increase the risk of developing diabetes mellitus type 2 due to a number of effects animal protein has on the body. It increases inflammation and an insulin-like growth hormone known as IGF-1, and red meat and eggs have been shown to contain or produce substances that clog arteries and lead to increased inflammation and cancer risk.
Diabetic nephropathy is a complication that can affect as many as 40% people with diabetes. Kidney damage in diabetes can be diagnosed by testing for ketones.

People with diabetes may be advised to lower their consumption of protein due to the gluconeogenesis process in the body that suppress consumption of insulin. Oily fish and lean meats, such as skinless chicken and turkey, are often recommended for a diabetic diet.

Eating a diabetic diet doesn’t mean eliminating sugar altogether. If you have diabetes, you can still enjoy a small serving of your favorite dessert now and then. The key is moderation.

Reduce your cravings for sweets by slowly reduce the sugar in your diet a little at a time to give your taste buds time to adjust.

Add some healthy fat to your dessert. Fat slows down the digestive process, meaning blood sugar levels don’t spike as quickly. Think healthy fats, such as peanut butter, yogurt, or nuts.

When you eat dessert, truly savor each bite. Make your indulgence count by eating slowly and paying attention to the flavors and textures. You’ll enjoy it more, plus you’re less likely to overeat.

Tricks for cutting down on sugar

- Reduce soft drinks, soda and juice
- Don't replace saturated fat with sugar

- Sweeten foods yourself. eg: Buy unsweetened iced tea, plain yogurt, or unflavored oatmeal as you’ll likely add far less sugar than the manufacturer.

- Check labels and opt for low sugar products

- Avoid processed or packaged foods.

- Find healthy ways to satisfy your sweet tooth. eg: Instead of ice cream, blend up frozen bananas for a creamy, frozen treat.

- Start with half of the dessert you normally eat, and replace the other half with fruit.
