What is white priviledge, really?

In accordance to the article, white privilege is still very prevalent today. Stats show this and they go hand in hand with racism. In Their eyes were watching god, the small town of Eatonville has no mayor, so Joe Starks decides he shall be mayor. When he goes to get a loan eveyrone says he the whites won't give him the time or day. This may be a small minor detail because he in fact does get the time of day, but it shows how even small things like loans are affected. This also implies the white community has money and are able to get what they want. This is still prevention today, looking at the article you can see mortgage differences and other financial stats that back up this claim. Racism was part of the problem during the 1900’s and still today in 2018, with people believing that them being racist isn't a problem, but rather the blacks are the problem.

A slam poetry reading about woman being less than human, especially those who are not white, which is a problem we have all over the world today. Woman for centuries have always been thought of as less than men and unworthy, but especially woman of color. 64,000 black woman missing since 2010, woman lost all over the world, only to be known of by a hashtag. Rape claiming 140,000 woman as young as 12, in Honduras less 2% of crimes against women have been investigated, 700,000,000 woman turned bride before 7th grade, and little girls taught to scream when taken, young boys taught its okay to pick on girls if you like them. In this slam poetry we hear the statistics stacking against women. This is one of the most debated topics in today's news, on social media platforms, and it can directly relate back to their Eyes were Watching God. Janie is abused day by day by Joe, she is told she can't make a speech, and that her place is in the kitchen with her mouth shut, slavery has just ended, and because of the world Janie lived in she couldn't find her voice. Even when she did find her voice it was because of a man. Woman today are silenced by men, called names, are told not saying anything is consent. While men and boys are growing and raised just like they were in the time Janie lived. Femicide, the deliberate slaughter of a woman is a crime. (*disclaimer, facts couldn’t be checked)

Blackface on CBS

Blackface was a very popular theatrical play that was put on and was prominently used to degrade and create stereotypes about people with dark skin. On CBS a whole show was cancelled due to Megyn Kelly's remarks and comments about blackface. As a nation discrimination is highly frowned upon, but not gone. The remarks by Kelly about Blackface, who was used to keep african americans below whites, shows that we have not gotten rid of discrimination just because of the color of your skin. Just like in Their Eyes were Watching God, there is still discrimination towards African Americans, espcially African American woman. The things related to Blackface are in similar contexts to how when the hurricane hit in florida the African Americans were put in a mass grave with lime dust over them, while the whites who were killed were put into individual caskets. Showing the social status between the two races. As we can see, discrimination is still very prominent today, especially on social media and news platforms.

A Single Story

A single story is comparing and contrasting how when you only know slightly different versions of a story and these stories are repeated over and over again that's what you will believe. In the ted talk she talks about how she grew up reading american children's books and thus the stories she wrote were about them, this is similar to Their Eyes were Watching God because when we first started to read it, I was surprised that Janie was involved in a white family and was able to talk to and play with them. In most other stories I have read, heard, or learned about African Americans were kept separate from white children, unless it was an encounter of the african american and white child passing on the streets. The stories we learn about in school are about the segregation and about how whites are always superior and how african americans are not allowed to interact with whites. Hearing this ted talk helped me to better understand their eyes were watching god because it showed me that this information at the beginning of the book is true and wasn't just unique to the book, that there is more than just segregation during this time period. I also believe it helped me to better understand the rest of the book and Janie's perspective of herself.

Emma Watson delivered a speech to the United Nations, in her speech she says, “I think it is right that I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and the decisions that will affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.” In America and all over the world woman are paid less than men for doing the same job. Men are also allowed to make decision for a woman, but she is not allowed to. This is way more common than people belive it too be, but Emma Watson, in front of the UN she talks about this problem. There are huge gender gaps in many aspects of all women's lives.

"Human rights are women's rights, and women's right are human rights." Hillary Clinton said this in a speech at a United Nations meeting in Beijing. This is just another example of how badly our world is run, woman have to fight for basic rights. Woman are allowed to rally and protest, but still woman have many gaps that need to be closed. Females have gained the right to vote, adm the right to own property, but still today someone can’t make decisions on her body without a male's consent. Therefore, yes woman have come a long ways, but still clearly have a long ways to go.

In a lot of communities, not so much in America as other countries, it is believed that girls shouldn't be educated or at least educated beyond a certain age. This was a very big concept all over the world until recently. A lot of girls have the option to be educated and even achieve high pay, high class jobs. This didn't used to be the case and in some places still isn't. Men believe that women shouldn't be educated because there place is in the home. All girls should have the option to be educated and learn to be what they want. It is men restricting and continuing the ways of before. In some communities like the one in the article, there is poverty stopping girls from going to school. How do you choose to feed or educate your daughter(s)? No girl should ever have to deprived of an education, when a lot young boys in the same spot do get an education.

FGM, congress steps back and so does America.

FGM, was historically unconstitutional, but recent times have changed this in the United States. In 1996 the ruling was made that the courts did not have the power to ban it and the power had to lay with the individual states. This is a huge step back for many woman, and it affects women globally too. People come to the U.S. to seek refuge, but how can young woman come here and feel safe when FGM is a common practice to keep woman “pure and wholesome” in other countries, but now its not even banned by the U.S. constitution. Woman do not usually have a say if FMG happens to them because it is a common practice on children under 5 in many middle eastern countries. It used to keep woman from having a say on their own bodies, this procedure denies young girls the right to their bodies. The FGM procedure is banned or criminalised by at least 59 countries and several international treaties. It is considered a human rights violation by the World Health Organisation. The United States is moving backwards on this issue while many other countries are moving forwards.

In Their eyes were Watching God Janie and the other woman in her town didn't speak much. Janie in particular, was taught to stay quiet. Throughout the book the woman were silenced and it was always men talking and giving their thoughts. Just like in this poem, she cant speak, for she has never been allowed to. Men and society have silenced her and continue to silnce her, just like they have the rest of the woman of color and all woman in the world for that matter. Woman cant speak, for they aren't acknowledged. Woman of color have it even worse than white woman. They are killed and told they are less than human for the color of their skin and the fact that they can carry a baby. This is how the world has thought and still thinks. America, a place where you can be free and say what you want, yet so many black woman are too scared to speak. Just like Janie, for her surroundings and who she was with limited her from ever speaking and ever being her own person.

Girls are taught this and girls are taught that. Men are taught what? Nothing that a girl can do because the girl must wait on him. This is how it has been for years and centuries. Woman do this and that and the men work. The woman must not speak for that is the mans job, woman must not learn anything more than her mother has taught her. This is how the world has been, sexist against women and girls. Women couldn't vote, couldn't own land or property, they were the property. Then they married off at the age of 16. This is how the world has been and still is today. That is how Janie was treated in Their Eyes Were Watching God, she was married off after a single kiss with a boy. American still hasn't come far since Janie. All over the world girls are taught to be respectful towards men, but men can cat call and rape without a word. This is how it was during the time Their Eyes Were Watching God was written, and not much has changed.
