Singapore got chosen as a port because it had a good location, it was right in the middle of the route the Chinese took to get to Europe and the Europeans took to get to china. This made it a good trading port because it was a port where sailers could stock up on food, water and coal.

The monsoon winds were also in Singapore’s favour as the northeast winds would carry ships coming from Europe higher to china, making it easier to take that route, letting more people from Europe take the route. The southwest monsoon winds would carry Chinese sailers down further to Europe , letting more Chinese take that route and put stop at Singapore. This let trade flourish as more people passed through the straits of Melaka, which is why Singapore was chosen to be made a port.

The Dutch dominated the control of the trade in SEA, which disallowed the British traders to trade at any Dutch port with some exceptions where they would be charged with high taxes. This severely cut the amount of profit that they could gain from trade and posed as a threat to their economy. The British needed to facilitate the trade by the British in SEA. The port would be able to control rising Dutch influence in SEA and prevent them from further expansion. The physical safety of their trade was also threatened by the Dutch as the ships were not allowed to stop at any Dutch ports to refuel, restock or trade opium. Therefore, a port was crucial. The southern tip of the Straits of Melaka was also suitable due to its geographical location, thus allowing the British to ensure the safety of the British ships travelling through SEA from Dutch warships. Also, their current ports were not suitable, as they were too far away from the trade. So, the British had to find another port in SEA.
