A group of Rice University bioengineering students have developed a possibly life-saving device to aid in more effectively defibrillating patients (Williams, 2018). Their device can be easily attached to standard defibrillator pads, sinking 180 needles through the epidermis and into the dermis to more effectively deliver a shock during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Human skin is not a good conductor, and the team estimates that this device can decrease impedance by 72%.

Has been demonstrated to more effectively deliver shocks, which could in turn decrease amount of time until return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), and thus have better patient outcomes (Williams, 2018).

Easy to use. Simply line up with defibrillator pads and push into skin.

Modeled to fit over defibrillator pads currently being used, so no need to purchase and distribute new supplies, making it cost effective.

Needles do not penetrate deep enough to draw blood, decreasing the risk of contracting blood-born disease in the event of an accidental needle stick to providers

Risks of burns to skin have not been studied. Defibrillator pads already have a high burn risk, what will adding needles do to the skin (Williams, 2018)?

It is yet another step to add to an increasingly complex CPR algorithm

Could the needles disrupt the AED from determining between precise rhythms, such as asystole, which is not defibrillated, and fine ventricular tachycardia, which is defibrillated?

This device should be further studied and mass produced. When round after round of CPR has been ineffective at achieving ROSC on a patient, providers and family can become desperate and try anything that might possibly save the patient's life. Even if this device does not become a first line treatment due to aforementioned burn risks, or other unknown complications, many patients would rather be left with burns and still be alive than to have died.

My top 5 strengths are: Input, Learner, Relator, Discipline, and Achiever (Gallup, 2021). My Input and Learner strengths will allow me to form a plan to implement the Zfib as a part of the code procedure in the hospital, and to continuously improve this plan based off of new information and feedback. I will use my Achiever and Discipline strengths to effectively execute a plan to roll out the Zfib throughout the hospital. I have a natural desire to be productive and derive satisfaction from putting a plan into action and seeing its success. My Relator strength will help me form relationships with stakeholders key to success as well as the providers using the Zfib, which is a key aspect of a successful project.

Two of my strengths are from the Strategic Thinking category, two are from the Executing category, and one is from the Relationship Building category (Gallup, 2021). None of my strengths lie in the Influencing category, and therefore I will choose Carter, Matthew, and William, whose strengths are Communication, Maximizer, and Woo, respectively. William will assist us in creating buy in from stakeholders of all disciplines, as well as get providers excited about using the Zfib. Matthew will help the team utilize their strengths and take our project to the next level. Carter will help us effectively communicate with aforementioned key stakeholders, as well as educate providers on the Zfib. To round out our team, I will also recruit Faith and Daisy. Faith, whose strength is Futuristic, would be an excellent addition to the team as she could see where the project could possibly go and inspire others to get on board and join our efforts. Finally, Daisy's strength as a Developer will help us see the potential in our providers and in our team and help us reach our full potential.
