Gatsby

I feel as though while Gatsby is a cool rich man, he is so illusioned by love, he is created unnecessary drama, which could lead to a bad ending. Daisy is someone who has moved on, and Gatsby is simple not OK with that. He continues be petty about his relationship with Daisy when he says "cant repeat the past, why of course I can?" (Fitzgerald 69) when in reality he most likely cant and should not.

I believe he is also a little delusional because he hosts these wild parties in hope that Daisy will show. And finally in chapter 6 when she did show, she was not impressed. Gatsby should learn to move on because he is making himself crazy chasing Daisy.

He could find anyone else, but doesn't. When she doesn't seem to reciprocate the feelings he gets upset that he isn't having his way, and then asks her to divorce her husband. He's really needy.

This is directly stated with " 'Can't repeat the past...Why of course you can!' "(69). He has some stalker based traits that come off as creepy "Five years next November" (55) and completely oblivious to the fact that Daisy just can't leave Tom that easily because she has built up the life and reputation around her. I think Daisy still has some love for Gatsby, but not in the same way he has for her.

I think he's incredibly selfish to expect Daisy to drop everything she's built for herself in the past five years just because he misses her. He had a chance, he didn't take it. I also don't get how he's able to spend millions of dollars on a house across the lake from Daisy when he wasn't even sure she remembered him. What was he going to do if she said she had no idea who he was? Move closer? Not to mention, he had to have his friend set up the tea party with her, because even though he's capable of moving across the lake from her and spending all that money, God forbid he makes an effort to meet up with the girl he's obsessively in love with himself,

Like on page 51 she directly tells Nick to simply invite her over without telling her that Gatsby will be there.

This gives off a weird vibe to the reader because it isn't normalized to talk in this way about a married women, especially when all he has done for the past 5 years in obsess over this women even though until about a week ago he hadn't talked to her for 5 years.

Gatsby informs Nick that he "came into a good deal of money"(42) and "lived like a young rajah in all the capitals of Europe"(42). I think Nick is very intelligent and is very suitable as a narrator for the book because of his wits. He recognizes all of the lies being told in the book, even mentioning how he feels that he is "one of the few honest people"(39) that he has met. His wits help carry the book along and provide context for the reader in many different scenarios, making him a perfect fit as a narrator.

Gatsby

In chapter 6, Gatsby invites Nick, Tom, and Daisy to one of his extravagant parties, where he notices that something is off and immediately assumes that Daisy "didn't have a good time" (Fitzgerald 69). Although Gatsby is wealthy and owns a comically large mansion to throw these flashy parties, he still goes on and on about Daisy, who is already married with a daughter by now. Gatsby doesn't appreciate all the things he already has just to pine over the concept of the woman he loved 5 years ago.

Daisy

I think that Daisy has always been portrayed as a sophisticated character, having a lot of knowledge and knowing what she wants. Until Chapter 5 on page 62, I thought the same, but when she starts to feed into Gatsby's love for her by staying in Gatsby's home and allowing Nick to leave them together, it portrays her as more of a cheater and not knowing what she wants since she is also married. I think that Daisy needs to figure out what she wants between Gatsby and Tom because Gatsby wants to be with her but that can't happen if Daisy and Tom are still married.

I truely am repulsed by him as a person, and that feeling does not change at all as the story progresses. He is a discusting man who is extremely self centered and stuck up. He cheats on Daisy constantly without a second thought, but then when Daisy is with Gatsby he finds it odd and weird. I cant understand why he would think its ok to cheat but then not apply that same logic to Daisy.

When Tom asks to go have dinner with some other people she says, "and if you want to take down any addresses here's my little gold pencil" (105). This shows that she knows that Tom is most likely going to continue to have affairs, but she doesn't care because she has started to rekindle things with Gatsby. This feels like a power move on her part because it shows that she doesn't care if he goes out and has affairs with other women.

I think that on page 55 when he sates "five years next November" is showing how he has yearned for this girl and wishes he could have her. Although he is a great guy he is also kind of full of himself in a way. he has a lot of connections and all of his friends are very important people. He just picked Nick out of nowhere because he could get him closer to Daisy. Maybe Gatsby is just using Nick for Daisy.

I really liked how she was able to find more confidence in herself after starting up with Gatsby again and was able to hold her own more with Tom's cheating, but I feel like she needs to sort out her priorities and figure out which man she wants to be with in the end.

Nick describes all of the parties as fun filled but when Tom is there, "an unpleasantness in the air". (66) Tom's arrogant and controlling personality lingers over everywhere he goes and everyone can sense it. another example is when Nick describes "Perhaps his presence gave the evening a peculiar quality of oppressiveness". (66) I think this makes a lot of the conversations with him awkward because people don't want to make him angry.

Nick

I believe that Nick is in this story to show the "normal people" who aren't consumed in riches, poverty, or unhappy with life. Nick shows in the beginning of the story that he is not able to afford a lot, but he is able to afford Gatsby's shed that was only 80 bucks a month. Fitzgerald uses Nick as a way to show in the in and outs of the story, and makes Nick someone in the story that is more of a normal character.

Tom

I really like the role of Tom in the book because although he is the most negatively portrayed character in the novel, his control and oppression of Daisy helps foster these conflicts in many chapters. It is evident that Daisy doesn't enjoy her life with Tom, as he is always cheating on her and diminishing her as a person. Daisy even mentions how terrible her life is and how she is "pretty cynical about everything"(16). However, his oppression leads to the conflicting ideas in the mind of Daisy when she has her affair with Gatsby. She is scared to tell Tom her true feelings because of his power over her, leading to some tense events. This is what makes him a great character for the plot, his power and control over Daisy forces Gatsby to keep dreaming about a different life.

Nick is trying to help Gatsby, but it does kind of seem like a huge waste of time. Daisy already has a life outside of just Gatsby now, and Gatsby himself is too cowardly to do anything about it.
