The characteristics of a civilization that had the most influence on the Mesopotamian society is social structure. Social structure impacted Mesopotamian society because then people with higher social structure got treated better and had more benefits. But people with lower social structures had to work harder and did not get treated as well. Another reason social structure impacted Mesopotamian society was by giving some form of ruling and workers.

According to the “Social structure article” it states “Mesopotamia was one of the earliest civilizations to establish a social structure. Many social structures are based on a hierarchy in which some people are valued more than others. People in Mesopotamia believed that a king was the link between the earth and the heavens. A kingdom would only prosper if the king pleased the gods.”

This evidence suggests that Mesopotamia did have hierarchy and people got treated differently for their social structure. And if you had higher social structure, say you are a king, then the people of Mesopotamia believed that the king had the link between heaven and Earth. So the King was very important.

According to “Document 5: Social Structure” it states “It is important because it created a set of rules that helped to govern a civilization while trying to protect people even if they had little political power. It called for different punishments based on the class of the lawbreaker and the victim of the crime.”

This shows that people in Mesopotamia were viewed differently. And when a person in the lower class would commit a crime, the punishment would be more harsh then if you were in the upper class. This is because of class statues. And the government would believe that the lower class should be treated more poorly.
