Beautifully illustrated non-fiction books are an important part of the Cicada publishing list, and are a growing part of the kid's book market. Publishers are looking for ideas that appeal to parents and to the gift market, but which also fit into library and school collections.

THE TEXT

Subtitle 1: How Do Puppies See the World? —— Open Your Eyes with the Animals!

Have you ever wondered if the world that cats and dogs see is the same as ours? In fact, their eyes are structured differently from humans', so the colors, brightness, and even the details of the images they see are all different! Many people think that dogs are "color blind" and can only see black and white, but in fact, they can distinguish between blue and yellow, just not red and green. So, in a dog's eyes, a lush green lawn might look more like yellow, and a red toy might appear more like brown. Besides, dogs have strong night vision and are better adapted to the dark than humans. Their eyes have a special "reflective layer" that allows them to see more clearly in low light. That's why a dog's eyes seem to "glow" in the dark!

So, although the world that cats and dogs see is different from ours, they each have their own unique "superpowers" that help them adapt to their own way of life!

Subtitle 2: Insects — How Amazing Are Their Eyes?

Apart from cats and dogs, the visual world of other animals might be even more magical, and perhaps beyond our imagination!

For instance, the compound eyes of insects enable them to perceive more details and angles than humans. The eyes of bees can sense ultraviolet light, which means they can see flower patterns that are invisible to us. These special "invisible" marks are like runway lights at airports, helping bees accurately locate the nectar sources of flowers. The eyes of dragonflies are even more powerful. Their compound eyes are composed of tens of thousands of small eyes and can see the world around them in a 360-degree, all-round view, making them top aerial hunters!

LAYOUT

Although a non-fiction book will have a designer (and for most publishers, an art-director), it's a real asset if an illustrator has a sense of layout and how their illustrations are going to work within it.

A good format for a non-fiction book is 235x280mm (portrait). Graphic novel format can be smaller - likewise if the book is aimed at a slightly older 'middle grade' audience.

Your font should be readable -- around 12pt (depending on font). You might want to have another font that is a bit smaller and more informal for fun aside facts or dialogue.
