GIMP

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for editing photos by retouching, image composition and image authoring. This is a simple graphic design software which can be used for creating:
posters/brochures/certificates/presentations/letterheads/graphics and design for social media/marketing materials/invitations/
…and many other types of content. It has thousands of templates you can use to get you and your learners started, many of which are free.

Here is a promotional leaflet for a pizza restaurant, created using Canva.

Canva can also be used to create infographics using a drag and drop facility.

I also use it to capture the content/format of my weekly sessions, which can then be easily updated as I integrate and experiment with new tools. When designing a new module, I find coggle.it particularly useful to set out my ideas and collaborate with others during the early stages of the design process.

  • WeVideo     is a cloud-based video editor, that also allows users to share videos across a team. A number of tutorials on how to use WeVideo are available on their website.
    Vimeo is an alternative app for hosting and sharing videos.

  • iMovie for iPhones and PowerDirector for Android phones are mobile phone apps for editing, adding titles, music and voiceovers to videos.
  • Quik for Android phones and Quik for iPhones
  • Splice is a video editor and movie maker, but is only available for iOS
  • Vectr is a free graphics software that allows collaborative working. This YouTube video talks about the process of creating a professional video, no matter which software you use, in 3 simple steps.

    • Google Slides for presentations

    Office 365 is a similar suite of applications, which includes OneNote, a digital notebook which can be shared with other OneNote users.

    These applications allow contributors to work on the same document rather than their own different versions. It also allows work to be shared without having to send it by various means.

    Dropbox is a file-hosting service which allows documents to be accessed from anywhere and shared.
