The Black Death began in the late 1340s, it originated in central Asia and quickly spread through to Southern Russia, it then made its was through to Italy and Greece. The Black Plague was at its strongest and most dominant between the years of 1348 and 1350. The main reason for the outbreak of the plague was because of diseases transmitted by fleas and rats, and the disease that the fleas and rats carried was Yersinia pestis, a disease which affected the blood. The disease spread like wildfire, across many countries within the Northern hemisphere.

The children's rhyme: 'Ring a Ring o roses' was a poem created about the Black Death, which occurred in Europe in the late 1340s. The poem is about the symptoms of the Black Death. The first line of the poem tells us about an early symptom of the plague - a red, circular rash. The second line is about a way that people protected themselves from the disease - having posies on and around them. The second last line is about when people got sick with the disease and the last line is about how the whole country fell because of the Black Plague.

Impact on society

In Medieval Europe there was a feudal system, the feudal system consisted of the people in the below table. On top was the King and on the bottom were the peasants. This feudal system was very strong and stable until the Black Death occurred, the Black Death demolished this system and flipped it on its head. The plague was so strong that it wiped out almost everyone. Only few survived, and the few that did survive demanded change. The peasants demanded higher wages because, they were doing more work than what they were supposed to, the reason for this is that there were not enough peasants to do all the work like in the past. In most places the manor system fell apart and was no longer existent. If this plague had not occurred then there would be a slight possibility that todays society would be like it was back then.

`The Black death killed 50 million people in Europe in the 14th century, or 60% of Europe's entire population and around 140 million people world wide. This plague was one of the strongest plagues that killed way more people that WWI and WWII combined, the swine flu and the regular flu. This graph shows how deadly and tragic the Black Death really was.

TIME KEY: 0.26 - 0.47
Millions of people died from the Black Death, but there was not enough space to buy them all in individual graves. So, people came up with the idea of digging deep trenches to bury the bodies in. The trenches were deep enough that they could easily layer the bodies one on top of the other to save space. During this video archeologists discover a plague pit in London, thought to be from the events of the Black Death. The way that the bodies are positioned when buried give clues that the bodies are in fact from the Black Death.
