As a child, my parents supported my interests in gymnastics.

Throughout high school, I was able to pursue competitive dance, as my family could support it financially.

My schools had strongly funded arts programs, which provided many opportunities for exploration as well.

Life-Yvonne: I am a homeowner so there is a sort of privilege in that I am not subject to the unlawful or lawful actions of a landlord. For example: forced evictions and different landlord requirements and requests.

Life:

Being a Muslim woman in America, I don't think I hold privilege in my daily life. Growing up I faced discrimination, racist jokes, and even threats. I was once blamed by a group of strangers for what happened on 9/11, something that happened before I was even born.

Creativity:

Throughout my life, I always felt like my ethnicity wasn't represented. I remember always choosing Asian when asked to choose on a form for school or work because Arab or Yemeni wasn't an option.

As a middle school, I remember having to check a box for my ethnicity about race and disability and how to identify myself. But there are different ethnicities such as Hispanic, Asian, American, etc. For example, I was Asian-American and being deaf. I always remembered that feeling disability is not listed such as being deaf or not checking on disability sometimes.

I don't have seen a lot of Hispanic and Asian-American heritage appear in different books.
