It seems to me that international mindedness is the need of understand others to collectively work on big problems. It is to be open-minded to the world around us, to recognize and celebrate the differences. It is to understand an individual or a population before creating judgment.

There is a great correlation between international Mindedness and CFIS' values. It is interesting, as you might find with your own school's mission statement as well. Global citizen is a individual who develop an awareness to other cultures. It is someone who is genuinely interested in learning about other's religion, lifestyle, and culture.

Using case studies and real world examples and situations in biology, chemistry, physic, design technology and computer science is a great way to introduce the idea of global citizenship. The language and the philosophy of the class discussion should be around the use of the science knowledge to help people live in a better place and in a better way.

Some topics, such as population genetics, can get great real life examples. I have been using different culture in different parts of the world to explore the difference in the gene pool. Also, some scientific debates aim to develop an understanding of how biology can be beneficial for some culture or individual.

#5 the importance of internationalism in biology

Showing the process of scientific research to our students, and even have them experiment some research on their own, can show the internationalism. They build their research on common previous knowledge, and they should share their understanding of their research to the rest of the world, using IB connections, or other organism such as UNESCO or ROUND SQUARE. This is the idea that every individual researcher is in collaboration with one another.
Also, develop a passion for the human body, or the environment, can improve the importance of internationalism in biology because they may realize that every human body is the same , or that every ecosystem is interconnected.

I do not have the chance to have a culturally diverse group of students. Therefore, the international mindedness needs to be develop through examples or case studies. NCCSTS is a great ressource for case studies for an variety of subject. I've adapted one of their case study on my class that discuss the interaction with the fishing policies in international water and the unexpected change in the ecosystem dynamism, affecting the food source of the population.
Another example of international Mindedness in biology that I experienced is with the visit of a speaker, a retired surgeon who constructed and operated a hospital in Africa. His experience shared with the students definitely highlighted cultural differences between Canada and Guinea.
